I have wanted a paddle scabbard like this, and when the Vine program offered me one to review, I jumped on it. It’s not kayak season yet, so I haven’t paddled with this, but I did try installing it on a 17 foot Wilderness Systems Tempest 170 Pro kayak. This is not the kayak that I ultimately plan use this one, so I rigged some temporary lines to try it rather than untying the perimeter lines on the kayak. I used some white rope for that so that it will show up in the photos. And overall, I think these scabbards will work great. They are held in place securely with just a little wiggle possible, and the paddle feels securely held as well. The scabbards are made from a medium weight cloth (maybe polyester or nylon). Each of the scabbards has a thin plastic sheet inside, rolled up into a tube, to keep the scabbard open. That works well. And they ship with a piece of white closed cell foam inside to keep the plastic liners from being crushed. I’m going to save those pieces of foam and slip them in during the off season. There are two straps with cam buckles that hold the two scabbards together. You can adjust the strap length to adjust the scabbards to your hull shape, and release the cam buckles to free up the scabbards to access a deck hatch that falls underneath. It all works well. One odd thing is that those straps mount on opposite side of the scabbards. The forward straps are sewn on the top of the scabbards while the rear strap is sewn to the bottom. Or flip the assembly over and the positions reverse. I took a picture showing this. It doesn’t detract from the function, and the photos on the Amazon product page also show this, but I haven’t figured out yet if there’s a reason they are configured like this.So far, these look like they will work very well and I’m giving them a five-star rating. I’ll update this review if I run into any issues once it gets warm enough to start kayaking.
