Super.

The units are definitely overpriced but the real problem is the handle is to short. When you place the unit in a fire the handle can get very hot due to it not being long enough. Recently went camping with a group of scouts and of all the units in the fire this one had the shortest handle and became very hot compared to the others which were fine.

My husband loves to have bonfires, and he and I both have fond memories of when we were kids, camping, and making delicious sandwiches and pies over the fire with irons just like these. So naturally, I ordered these irons right up as soon as I saw them and gave them to him to open as a surprise. Needless to say he loved them. These pie irons are so much like the ones I remember. These irons' handles are a little different from what I remember the classic pie irons having. I'm pretty sure that the handles of yesteryear's irons were longer, and they were super heavy to hold-- I remember that much for sure. These irons definitely have some heft to them as well, but the shorter handles make them a little more tricky to use over a big campfire. We definitely have to wait for the fire to die down a little before using the irons so we don't burn off our eyebrows lol. These pie irons work really well and we didn't experience any problems, and the sandwiches and pies that we made with them tasted just as good as we remember. The recipe cards that came with the irons are a really sweet touch, and there are a few recipes that we want to try in the future, but for the first time we used them, we made good ole' fashioned pizza sammies, and then cherry pies for dessert just like we used to. :) Nostalgia overload!

These pie irons are not just for camping; they work great on the stove for indoor cooking also. I have been using the irons on my gas stove, but they’d also work well on an electric stove and would work on an induction cooktop (though if the stovetop was glass, I’d want a metal plate between the glass and the cast iron to protect the stovetop from scratching). The irons come unseasoned (as does most cast iron cookware). To season them, I gave them a light coating of canola oil using a paper towel and put them into my toaster oven at 450F for an hour, allowing them to cool down in the oven. I did this half a dozen times using a light coating of oil each time to build up a polymerized non-stick coating. In spite of my preparations, my first experiment with these irons was a complete failure. The reason was that I was not aware that the sandwich should be placed onto the iron when the iron is cold. I made the mistake of preheating the iron, much as I’d do if making a pancake. This caused the bread to stick horribly, in spite of my seasoning efforts. After a good soaking in water, most of the burned-on mess came free (as with any cast iron, I would not put these into the dishwasher, and would not even use soap on them in clean-up).My second (and subsequent) tests with the irons have been total successes. By placing the sandwich onto the iron when the iron is cold, it allows the buttered bread to grill nicely, the filling to warm up, and the cheese to get gooey. As with any sandwich, the quality of the sandwich depends on the quality of the bread and the ingredients that go into it.I like the fact that the irons have ridges on the inside to make “grill marks” on the bread. I like the double latch on the closure (the S-hook and the loop at the end, which fits into a groove on the wooden handle). I like the size of the irons (they make a single sandwich just fine as well as double ones). I like the fact that the handles are detachable - it makes the irons easier to season, clean up, and store. I like the fact that the handles are not too long; although this means that one’s hands would get closer to a campfire, it also means that the irons are far easier to use in the kitchen, which is where I will be using them most of the time since the sandwiches are so yummy.I do not see anything remarkable about the price. The cost on these pie irons is about the same as for a pair of other good-quality pie irons. But these are good-quality pie irons, and I’m pleased to have them and to recommend them. They are not just for camping.
