How low can you go? Eastwood's new "Dead Rat" Flat Black has a NEAR-ZERO gloss level! Maybe you think our Rat Rod Satin Black is too glossy for your rod, so we went to an extreme, creating the only single-stage acrylic urethane paint with a near-zero gloss level.

  • Catalyzed urethane for unsurpassed durability
  • Highly resistant to UV rays, chemicals, chips
  • Makes 1 sprayable Quart when mixed 3:1 with a required activator
  • Approximate coverage: 30 SQ FT
  • Max Temperature: Paint will handle up to 300 degrees without delamination, but color shift may occur, so it should not be used in a high heat setting

This premium 2-component topcoat system is blended with top-quality raw materials and advanced composition coatings technology. Superior to acrylic, alkyd and lacquer coatings. Eastwood's single-stage urethane paints hold their gloss longer and won't yellow.

  • Eastwood Dead Rat Flat Black - As the name implies, this black has no gloss. The dead flat look is perfect for the meanest looking rat rods and gassers.
  • Eastwood Rat Rod Satin Black - With a just-right amount of sheen, this satin black is perfect for old school street rods, bobbers and anything else that requires a unique hot rod look.
  • Eastwood Rat Rod Matte Clear - Provides exceptional long-lasting beauty and durability.
  • SINGLE-STAGE PAINT MIXING RATIOS

Thoroughly mix three parts single-stage urethane paint with one part Activator. No additional reduction is required but can be used as needed. Use caution in mixing materials as Eastwood’s single-stage urethane paint may begin to gel after approximately two hours (at 70 °F).

  • PAINT GUN SET-UP

HVLP Gun: Fluid Tip 1.3-1.5 mm Inlet Spray Pressure 25-30 psi

Conventional Gravity: Fluid Tip 1.3-1.6 mm Inlet Spray Pressure 45-50 psi

Conventional Siphon: Fluid Tip: 1.4-1.8 mm Inlet Spray Pressure 45-50 psi

  • APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Apply single-stage urethane paints in two to three medium wet coats as necessary to achieve sufficient coverage, allowing ten minute flash between coats. Additional coats may be necessary to achieve total coverage for some metallic colors. A final “fog coat” may be applied with metallic colors to help set an even flake pattern and /or adjust flake orientation. A dry film thickness of approximately 2 mil is recommended. Paint should be dust free within 10-15 minutes and tack-free within one hour (at 70 °F). Re-coat anytime after the previous coat has flashed, or before 18 hours. After 18 hours, paint should be abraded prior to re-coating for proper adhesion purposes.

This urethane paint may be applied as a stand-alone single-stage system, or in combination with Eastwood’s High Solids Urethane Clear as a basecoat/clearcoat system. Additionally, Urethane Clear may be integrated into Urethane color. When combining the two systems, be sure to activate each side (the paint and the clear) separately, with their own activators at the correct mix ratios, before blending.

When used as a Single-Stage Urethane Paint, this coating may be wet-sanded and polished for increased depth and gloss like any other urethane topcoat. Care should be taken when lightly cutting metallic colors to prevent disturbing aluminum flake.

I'm a hobbyist and used this product as part of my first vehicle paint job. Coverage was really excellent - this stuff comes out black like squid ink. After the second coat on the bumpers, I couldn't see any of the white primer underneath and was left with a beautiful matte sheen. One can covered a grille, valence panel, and two bumpers with a few ounces left over for some other trim pieces I'll get to later. That might not sound like much, but the grill and panel needed several coats because of the awkward spray angles into the grill fins. So those pieces used a lot more paint than a flat surface would.I used a budget LVLP spray gun and this paint went down very, very smooth. This product is worth every penny and I would buy Eastwood paint again for future products.
