Edit: it seems this product is no longer available, and my review has been attached to a different product. Be careful when purchasing. This water writing kit is helpful for practicing your Chinese calligraphy. I tried many options, and I think this is the best available choice in terms of performance and value.Pro: Kit comes in a reusable storage box. I like the plastic rails attached to the paper, they help the thin paper lay flat and make it feel like a scroll. The water paper bleeds less than some of the other options available, so your writing is fairly crisp. Dries in about 5 minutes. 18 practice squares with guides are a good size for beginners and match the size of the provided brush well. I am glad it has a regular brush instead of a water brush. Brush has a plastic handle, but it’s natural hair (probably goat?) and comes to a nice point. The brush is medium firm, there’s a core of firmer brown hairs, and the outside is softer white hairs. Brush has loop so you can hang it up to dry properly. Small water dish also can be used as brush rest. 12 double-sided practice cards show how to create the strokes with sample characters. I really like this because it’s like getting a calligraphy book included in the package but the cards are a much better form factor to use while practicing.Con: My first order was missing the brush, I had to send the kit back for replacement. I didn’t subtract this from the product rating because it looks like I got somebody’s return that hadn’t been checked properly and that’s more of a fulfillment issue than a product issue. The water writing paper is very thin and takes a while to lay flat. The edges can get crumpled if you’re not careful. It can be a little fussy to roll up the water writing paper tightly enough to store in the original box.Cautions: when you first take the brush out of the package, it will be filled with starch, which is part of the production process. Before you use the brush the first time, wash the bristles gently in tepid water (not hot!) until the starch is removed. You’ll get better results if you use the water writing paper on a soft surface like a felt pad or a tablecloth. Also, don’t use the brush for paint or ink, residue can discolor the water paper.

Like lots of other customers have mentioned the mat arrives with deeply creased folds. Mine also has chips in the writing surface along the creases. The surface makes very dark water lines so this is fine for practicing my hanzi. I'll just store it rolled to lessen the creases.

The paper works as advertised. Trouble is: Amazon folded and ruined the paper while packing it.Order from someone else.

It works. But quality could be better and it was folded leaving these strong fold lines that ruïnes the writing

Usefulness reduced due to clothes being folded. I’d pay a few cents extra to have them delivered rolled up in a tube.

Le papier est livré plié... les plis reste dans le papier et empêche de faire de belle calligraphie.... le papier devrait être roulé plutôt que plié!!

It works well. It’s quite larger and thinner than previous ones I have used. I don’t like how creased it is and how you have to keep folding it up to store it because it’s so big. I will be ordering smaller ones of hopefully better quality. The positive of the big sheet is that all my kids can use it at the same time. We have been enjoying it and it does work!

I first saw it from a friend who have one in scroll roll form. Alas, this is sent folded and the fold line cut short the zen feeling of doodling on the magic cloth

Nice product and does the job. My only complain would be that it came folded, and this created creases on the mat. Otherwise, works as expected. If you are an aspiring calligrapher or a sinophile exploring traditional brush script, this is a good start

If you are going to practice, this is MUCH better than newsprint. Better, too, because you can carry it with you. Water turns it ink-dark and, if you are slow and careful, the oldest characters will dry and vanish, ready for re-use, by the time the newest practice set is finished. Enough space for 48 characters or 12 large format characters. (Do not over-wet your brush and dribble dots across it.) I think it promotes a good discipline to calligraphic practice.

Great mat for calligraphy practice. It was a great upgrade from the paper version I used in the past.
