Brake light switches deteriorate with age causing them to malfunction. If your brake lights don't come on with a small amount of pressure applied to the brake pedal, it's time to replace your switch. We recommend always using a new switch when installing a new master cylinder. The thread size on this switch is M10 x 1.0.

This is not only for the VW. Many antique European cars used the same switch (the wiring terminals may need to be changed). Much cheaper and faster than ordering listed replacement parts from specialty catalogues.
