This is a very hammer so you don't have to swing it hard to get force. gentle tapping might do the job and enable more precision. also, being out of one piece of steel, the head won't get loose on the handle. a bit heavy for a backpack though. better suited to a bench or for day length jobs.

And sometimes you need a HAMMER, these estwing hammers are top quality, and as long as you don't use them as a prybar will litterally last a career. There's bassically no shock and you can swing it all day untill your arm gets tired. As a small equipment and airtool mechanic a good mid weight hammer is one of the most important tools in my box, and this one serves me very well . I've dropped it off of boom lifts and thrown it in the drink and it still doesn't care, I've used it to chip concrete from tow behind mixers and peen hot rivets ( not a fun job by any means) to delicately tapping a pin into place, these estwing hammers offer more control and steadfast durablity than any wood handled hammer I've ever used . If your going to buy a new hammer, go estwing. You won't break it, in fact I dare you to break one under normal use. They are a little more expensive than a lot of other hammers, but in reality they are cheap, you only ever have to buy one once, and if you somehow manage to break the head off, weld a rivet buster piston in it's place and you will get a beautiful lightweight doinker out of the deal.

I'm one who fell into the trap of buying cheap Chicom crap. After buying tools and rebuying them several times, I bought this, American made tool. I am totally happy with this and will never have to buy another.....unless I lose it or it gets stolen by someone who buys chicom crap.
