Build Your Own

Before you can start building a life-saving survival or emergency kit, you must consider the nature of its design. In other words, you must ensure that your emergency gear suits your environment. Building a helpful survival kit requires making strategic decisions about what you put inside it and – equally important – how it looks. Your emergency kit's supplies will largely depend on where you plan to use them. Suppose you're venturing on a wilderness expedition or looking for something to carry around daily. In that case, all of Exotac's products are simply must-haves for all survival kits regardless of your environment. Here are a few Exotac items to consider:

  • Exotac ToolRoll is the perfect canvas rolling bag, a compact solution for carrying all your fire-starting gear with you in your desired location. It has strong hook and loop closure straps to secure its contents; it also includes five elastic slip pockets and five mesh pockets.
  • Exotac FireSleeve is a flexible lighter case that fits classic BIC Lighters and creates a waterproof barrier around the lighter. It has an integral strap at the top that can provide hands-free use if needed.
  • Exotac MatchCap XL is an indestructible waterproof match case for storing matches and other survival gear. It includes a safety-match striker located inside the cap protected by an O-ring. The capsule can fit matches or other equipment up to 2.9 inches in size.
  • Exotac FireRod, NanoStriker, and PolyStrikers are our unique, striking tools designed to create the most prodigious spark for its size. It comes in various sizes, colors, and fire striking needs.
  • Exotac RipSpool is a lightweight field repair kit that can also be used for multiple survival tasks such as first aid, fire starting, fishing, and navigation. It includes High-Strength Synthetic Line (over 60 feet), Heavy Duty Repair Tape (over 50 in.), one #16 Sail Needle, and Fire Cord Lanyard (tinder).
  • Exotac TitanLight is the first rugged, waterproof, refillable lighter on the market that uses readily available liquid fuel. This lighter won't leak, and the O-ring seals allow longer intervals between lighter fluid refills.

I bought the original Exotac NanoStriker 12 years ago and found no difficulty using it to ignite a variety of tinder. That earlier model was smaller, had a 3/16 inch diameter ferro-cerium rod. I carried it in my pocket every day and never had the rod corrode or give any problems due to the well designed O ring seals. I enjoyed lighting the tops of dandelions growing in our yard, great practice. The top flares up instantly when a spark hits it. The original rod has lasted 12 years and provided many hundreds of hot strikes. I've used it to light alcohol stoves. My hand is medium size, my dexterity is excellent, and I never had a problem getting excellent strong sparks from it. This original model has been replaced by the the nanoStriker XL after losing the old nanoStriker from a hole in my pocket a month ago.As the photo shows, the new nanoStriker XL is larger, uses a 1/4 inch diameter rod, yet is still small enough to carry in a pocket, pouch, bag, or small survival kit. Every bit the quality of the first striker (which I found today while walking my dog). Being larger the rod will last a lot longer than the original. As you can see from my 12 year old nanoStriker it has been carried in my pocket long enough to wear the anodizing off and the surface is now shiny aluminum.A favorite tinder I like to make by working a little petroleum jelly into a cotton ball, kneading it well until it makes a slightly greasy cotton wad. Just pluck an edge to expose some fibers and they will ignite at the smallest spark. The petroleum jelly keeps the cotton burning a while, long enough to get small twigs and grass/leaves or pine cone burning.I highly recommend the Exotac nanoStriker XL if you want a compact reliable fire striker and you have some dexterity to handle the small striker and enclosed carbide striking blade. If the rod gets wet, be sure to dry it off well and leave it uncovered until all moisture is gone. Closing up the rod with water will corrode the ferro-cerium rod and shorten its life.

Was reluctant on purchasing any Exotac products because of price but I have slowly warmed up to them. The quality is second to none. Very well made. The striker is very sharp and will shower sparks when used. Small design works well on keychain. Glad I purchased. Recommended.

There are a lot of ferro rods out there. Many of them are marketed as something special. They really aren’t. They are mostly all basically Chinese rods packaged in different ways. Nothing wrong with that, but some of them are wildly over-priced. So why buy this one?Well.. it’s small, protected, and easy to have on you when you need it. That’s it pretty much. The best thing about this one is the striker. Yes, it’s small bordering on tiny. Yes, it’s hard to hang on to unless you attach something else to it. The thing is though, it’s carbide. It throws a great spark once you figure it out.I attach a rescue whistle and small knife to either end of this thing. I use the included fire cord for the knife attachment. It goes in my pocket when out in the woods. Gives me everything I need to build a fire or start a stove. It’s quite expensive. That’s not great but at least it is well made, put together right here in the USA. I know I can count on it in a pinch. You can get some replacement bits for it too, so it’s not disposable if that’s important to you. This shouldn’t be your only method of starting a fire if you are going out in the wild for a good while. But, for the average hike or overnight it’s just the ticket. One star off for the price.

Great size and east to handle. I think I would buy some of the larger rods for easier handling on super cold days though. The igniter is very effective.

I'm a licensed falconer and there is always a possibility of getting stuck out in the woods miles and miles form the nearest road and your vehicle... This fits perfectly on my dog tags chain (I'm active dut) and i wear this 24/7 and really don't even notice i have it on. Everythig is sealed and the rod creates awesome sparks - bright enought to use as a emergency spotter if needed. I do have to say that I carry Char cloth or char twine (twine works best)as this material will hold an ember for a very long time... but it's bets to have a piece of the cloth or twine in teh fire bundle you SHOULD have made in advance just in case. Also you could cary a vasoline squeeze (small tube) to use to catch a fire - but if you build your firebundle the correct way, that is all you sould need. THis little tool is AMAZING and the rods last 3000 strikes... I'm no where near that yet - but I use this for alost everything - just to challenge myeslef (from lighting the charcol, so ourside fires etc etc.I also have somethig called a "Fire Piston from Rose Mountain Fire Pistons - featured on National Geographic Channel and this is an even more primitive way to start a fire - but I ALWAYS USE iT FIRST and it rarely lets me down.It operates simply by puting char cloth (that you make at home in advance) and you place the piece of char cloth in the end of the rod and then compress the cloth and rod rapidly and the air gets soo hot so fast that it will actually start the char cloth smoldering and it is very easy to start a fire with the same fire bundlei use for the exotac nanostriter.I figure if i hvae both i will be ok if i'm stuck out in the woods overnight waiting for my bird to come down back to me in the morning.... as they will not at night time..... and all falconers will tell you...it's not if it's going to happen, it's when.so be prepared. thanks
