My 5 year old is in love with Bear Grylls and survival skills. I remembered I had bought this over the summer and had him try it out today. The look on his face says it all! He thinks it's the best thing ever. He can't wait to go camping again and start a fire this way.

If you're looking for a lightweight, simple fire starter which throws some impressive sparks and embers, this is for you. I bought this for backpacking and am very happy with it, as the rod is relatively light, and the scraper helps produce some serious sparks. I tested it near the back window of my home and my wife started yelling at me I was going to burn down the house! The included scraper is a decent thickness, I haven't had any problems with it bending, which I was frankly surprised of as I expected less. They are obviously stamped, and mine has a bit of a burr on the one side. This ended up actually being a benefit as it seems to help scrape up more sparks than the other side and produces some nice long-lasting embers. I haven't tried the other features of the scraper yet, thought I expect the tinder scraper half-circle is a bit dull for its purpose, I'll probably give it a quick sharpening before any real use. Overall, a nice fire starter for anyone looking to do some lightweight backpacking!

Great fire starter. Comfortable, ample handle. Thick, long cord. Nice and big magnesium rod. The rod is a lot larger than most others we have purchased. It’s also cylindrical, making is smooth to use. This is a nice piece, very handy and works well. Great deal.
