The Fowler 52-057-004 stainless steel mini vernier pocket caliper has an inch scale, a 4" measuring range, and a 0.001" graduation for measuring the inside diameter (ID) and outside diameter (OD) of holes, grooves, and tube thicknesses, and depth measurements of bores and grooves. Stainless steel construction provides durability and wear resistance, and sharp black graduations on a satin-finished bar ease reading. A locking screw secures the measurement tightly in place for accurate reading. The caliper includes a pocket-size fitted case.

Vernier calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to take inside, outside, and step measurements. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it with gearless precision to take measurements. The main scale is engraved directly on the beam while the vernier scale is engraved on the slider mechanism. The base measurement is taken from the long beam, which provides the initial whole measurement in inches, centimeters, or millimeters. To obtain the total measurement, the base reading is added to the vernier scale reading, which provides fractional measurements in inches or millimeters. A locking mechanism provides the ability to take differential measurements for determining the difference in measurements between two objects. Compared to digital and dial calipers, vernier calipers are more durable because they do not have internal moving parts, and are less prone to inaccuracy caused by shock, debris, and other contaminants, but they can be more difficult to read than digital and dial calipers. Vernier calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, and carpentry.

The Fred V. Fowler Company manufactures inspection and measurement instruments such as electronic indicators, calipers, bore gauges, and digital scales. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.

The calipers I received appear to have a mistake. Instead of having only 25 increments on the moving jaw. I have 50, making this almost Impossible to read as your eyes need to focus very hard and you have to count the line instead of just being able to look at the lines and understanding what it says. Im not sure how this made it through but I’d imagine a whole batch is made like this so if advised staying away from these for a while.

Not of the expected quality, poor even. Difficult to read the thou measurements. Does not match images in listing. Suspect it is not from Fowler, or maybe there is less strict QC on the 4” model.Definitely not worth the money. Save yourself the return.

I ordered this item because I needed to measure the width of a o-ring groove inside a small bore hole., A six inch vernier caliper would not fit inside the bore. This 4 inch caliper worked very well. The quality of the vernier is as good as the very well known manufactures of these measuring devices. Very pleased with the purchase of this item. (please note that I did not check the accuracy of this device)

Good calipers but had lots of unbroken sharp edges that needed cleaning up. Used emery paper to work them over. If you don't have good close eyesight might think twice about these.

works very well, a little hard to see the small numbers.

Good, easy to read being small. Handy size fits into pocket without trouble. Glad for no hard plastic case! - wish it had metric also
