I do not know if you are Scottish or not or if you just like to make steak pie but if you do you will most likely already use a Blackbird Pie vent or need to have a spare. The Pie Vent by Fox run is made of ceramic and is food safe to use being glazed to finish the product after it is originally baked and painted. Some people like to also use them for making regular fruit pies but you definitely need one if you are making a pastry pie crust because it lifts the pastry dough away from the wet ingredients to allow it to not only breathe but also for the pastry to cook better. It is safe to use up to a temperature of 450°F and will last for years and years of use. NOTE: this is not dishwasher safe, you must always clean it by hand but it is very easy to clean. I highly recommend.

This little pie blackbird vent works perfectly. It has a very clean hole through the top and small openings along the bottom to allow pressure to vent out of the pie. It is a little bit large, but it works exactly as it should. It is also cute enough to just leave sitting on your counter. I like that it is heavy, with nice thick walls, so I know it will stand up to years of use.

This is a really cute pie vent that is a play of the old nursery rhyme of 24 blackbirds baked into a pie.There are a lot of variations of pie vents, but the black bird one is a classic one.You can't see it in the photo, but the vent is on the back of the bird - it is a small hole to let out steam and prevent the pie filling from leaking over. It is as little low at 2.5 inches from the hole at the top of the bird's back to the bottom of the pie vent. It does fit a standard pie plate regarding depth, but a little taller would have been nicer to give a better clearance between the pastry that surrounds the bird when the pie puffs up during baking or you have extra pie crust going around the vent. I personally like a slightly higher clearance similar to the one sold by Lee Valley.Overall, it does work and you can always work around the shorter pie vent.It is a really nice homage to the nursery rhyme when baking.
