About this item

  • Emerald is the most famous member of the beryl family. Legends endowed the wearer with the ability to foresee the future when emerald was placed under the tongue, as well as to reveal truth and be protected against evil spells. Emerald was once also believed to cure diseases like cholera and malaria. Wearing an emerald was believed to reveal the truth or falseness of a lover’s oath as well as make one an eloquent speaker.
  • Use a soft micro-fiber cloth to remove the oil and dirt accumulated on the emerald jewelry. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on emerald jewelry. Ultrasonic devices and commercial jewelry cleaners will remove the oils that the emeralds have been treated with and will cause damage to the gemstones. Always put your jewelry on after you’ve applied make-up, hairspray or perfume, or the chemicals may damage the emeralds.

THE BIG 3

Emeralds, Sapphires, and Rubies (the “big 3”) are generally considered precious gemstones where as most other gemstones are considered semi-precious. ( apart from some Spinels). There are several reasons for this.

RARITY : Emeralds, Sapphires and Rubies are the rarest of all gems and therefore usually the most expensive.

DURABILITY : Another factor that plays into the cost is their durability. Sapphires and rubies are among the hardest gemstones, ranking 9 out of 10 on Mohs hardness scale.

BEAUTY : A really fine Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald can actually be valued higher per-carat than a diamond, which automatically categories these 3 as the ultimate-colored gemstones. However, the general rule is that the big 3 are the most expensive and valuable gemstones.

DISTINCTIVE GREEN STONE

Emerald is famous for its distinctive green color. Emerald is one of the four recognized precious stones.

A 1 carat Emerald appears larger than a 1 carat Diamond because of its lower density. Emerald measures between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

The Ruby measures 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, second only to the Diamond and corresponds to the Sapphire. The most important sources of rubies are in Asia and Africa.

No surprises. Refractive index of 1.57 matched the certificate. Gemstone is opaque, but that was expected. Nicely faceted and polished.

The stone they sent me was a 13x9mm shallow oval cut, blueish green stone. I bought it to show my grandson some cool inclusions under the microscope. It's advertised as an emerald, but it's not. Even pitted with bad polish I was able to measure the refractive index at 1.651-1.670, which is much too high for emerald - more like euclase. It's been badly fractured and green dye added to give color, the original stone looks colorless. I really didn’t expect much from an emerald that costs only $10, but I do think if they advertise it as an emerald then it ought to actually be an emerald.

Really pretty, nice looking gemstone. Is it authentic? I don’t know! It didn’t cost a whole lot so, I wonder! Nevertheless, it still is a great looking stone.

I am still going to use it but not in a prominent way--the stone was very washed out looking and would not be good for a ring setting that I was planning on using. Disappointed.
