Before getting into the review, it's important to remember that pocket calipers, regardless of brand or model, are meant for checking hardware/components, not for precision measurement during fabrication or inspection. My review is based on the expectation of a 4" pocket caliper, not a 4" hardened and ground steel vernier caliper.Summary:This is a great tool for checking SAE and metric hardware/components. Since this does not have a vernier scale, you are limited to just the accuracy of the inch and metric scales (1/16" and 1mm, respectively), plus any fractional increments you are comfortable approximating (e.g. if you know a diameter is a multiple of 1/32" that is not a multiple of 1/16", you can likely approximate a half increment). The fit and finish were better than I expected for a $10 tool, but I recommend stoning the external edges and inking the engravings. I've checked a variety of SAE and metric hardware with these, and I've been very pleased with the accuracy. Overall, these satisfy all my needs in a pocket caliper, and you can't go wrong for the price.Details:I bought this tool to check hardware/components/raw stock around the shop and at the scrap/steel yard. I wanted something that could fit in my pocket, was accurate enough to check nominal dimensions on common hardware/components/raw stock, and that would be inexpensive to replace if it was lost or damaged. This tool checked those boxes, so I decided to give it a try.Out of the box, the fit and finish were better than I expected, but the external edges needed to be softened and the engravings, though legible, could use some contrast. After softening the external edges (not the jaws or slide), I painted the surface black, then scraped the paint off with a plastic scraper so only the paint in the engravings remained. Since the engravings were able to hold the paint, I consider them adequate. With just a few minutes of cleanup, the tool was ready to go. Although the machining in the dovetail slide is rough, to motion of the slide is uniform, with no discernable sticking or slipping points (even without any lubricant), so I didn't see a need to polish it.The jaws of the caliper extend just over 3/4" from the major dimension of the dovetail slide, and although the scale on the caliper extends to 4", the slide extends less than 1/16" beyond the 4" mark. Realistically, I'd use this for dimensions less than 3.5".I used this to check motor shafts, pulley bores, nuts/bolts, round and flat raw stock etc... and been very pleased with the accuracy. It meets my expectations for a pocket caliper at an incredible price.

On arrival, this caliper was actually a Groz brand, not a General. In my opinion, the Groz brand is typically better than the General brand, so I am happy with what I received. But as a result, I can’t review the one made by General. However, I strongly suspect that the two are made by the same company and are identical. If so, it is a good caliper.

Solid but the slide does not work smoothly. It had a slight curve. After I straightened it the slide worked better but still could be better. I will try lubrication hoping that will help.
