I never knew such a thing existed until a work colleague told me them. Easy to install (I had to buy a metal core bit to drill through my garage door) but works perfectly when we loose power during a storm. Only issue I'd have is the metal cable should be a little longer.

Living in an area with power cuts quite regular, and my garage has no side door, this emergency opener has proved invaluable on many an occasion.

After getting locked out of garage 3 times... 2 due to power outage and 1 time my own fault, I finally installed the emergency garage door opener release and it was easy to install and only took like 15 minutes or so, I should've have done this a long time ago. SIDE NOTE...if you have to release garage door open with the emergency release cable, you probably will not be able to secure your garage door until the power is restored.

Product works great. Easy to install. Only thing is that key is universal. My garage was broke into a couple months after this was installed using the key. Around $4000 of my tools were stolen while I was at work. Just something to keep in mind. If you rekey you would be solid.

This was incredibly easy to install and very, very useful. I had a bad feeling about an upcoming storm and all the items I would want to have available in the event of a power outage were stored in my garage, which only has the one garage door entrance. Luckily, I was able to get this delivered prior to the event. Two days after I received and installed the product, a huge storm knocked out our power for several days and this handy little device allowed us access to our garage.

I installed this product on my garage door in the event that if my hydro goes out I can open the door to get my cars out. Very easy to install and works perfectly.

I tried Chamblain brand from Home Depot and their lock just fell apart as soon as I unlocked. Returned that one and bought this. Fits in to the existing hole and works just the way it should. It simply works for me.

This product arrived on-time, well-packed, and in good condition.Installation was easy, although TWO different sets of instructions were included with the product...which could cause confusion. One set of instruction was for 'Genie Emergency Release Kit Model GER-R' while the other set of instructions was for 'Vee Keyed Outside Disconnect Device'. The face of the product itself is stamped 'VEE', so I looked at the the Vee instructions first. They say to drill a 3/4" hole...but later qualified that by saying to 'Drill 1" hole for DVP'. I searched all over the internet but still could not figure out what was meant by 'DVP', and measuring the hardware itself showed that 3/4" was probably the correct dimension. I then proceeded to ignore the Vee instructions and simply install the kit per the Genie directions. I used a Milwaukee 3/4" hole dozer to drill the hole and found that 3/4" was the correct hole diameter for a perfect fit.The screw heads do not have any notches so, it is not possible to use a screwdriver to drive them from the outside...which aids security. Installation of the screws was trouble-free.The metal cable was approximately 3' long, which was approximately 1' too short to make the direct connection to the trolley release arm of my garage door (as called out in the instructions), so I needed to instead connect the metal cable to the nylon rope/handle (just above the knot) that serves as the release cord inside of the garage. With that, installation was complete and my testing showed that the lock mechanism worked properly and all that was required is a slow, firm pull of the newly-installed emergency release cable to release the door and allow for manual opening and closing. The outside face of the lock assembly/cylinder (which is visible outside of the garage) is stamped with a key number, in case you lose the two provided keys and need to replace them. It seems that this would harm security, in that just anyone could use the key number to order replacement keys from the manufacturer and then access the garage. The happening of that might be unlikely, as theft from a garage may more likely be a crime of opportunity, rather than one that's planned out in advance with the time to wait for replacement keys to be purchased and arrive to the criminal for use on a future visit to the garage. For my application, I'm not very concerned that this will be a problem. For other peoples' applications, perhaps it should be considered.I rated this 4 stars rather than 5 for the following reasons: 1) conflicting instruction sets, 2) cable of inadequate length, and 3) the possible security issue of having the key number stamped in a location that's visible.Other than those issues, the unit works well and was worth the price.

First things first. NOTHING is "universal." The lock and release work fine. I am guessing that some (most?) of the people who said the cable was too short installed the lock too low on the door. It works best in the top panel of the garage door. If you have a really tall door, it might be too short, but that could easily be remedied with an extension piece of cord or light chain. The screws were a little too long for my door. They are long enough for thick wood doors, but mine is thin metal. On my door, the center of the panel has a reinforcing bar that they touched, so I cut the screws shorter with a pair of electrician's pliers.Test it out. The device works when the key frees the bolt barrel, allowing you to pull the cable release. On my door, the cable fetched up on part of the door lift bracket, so I ran the cable forward, over the pin where the bracket fastens to the door. This kept the cable from fouling and improved the pull angle.
