A very simple electronics kit, great for a first or second project. Good instructions, good quality parts. A good schematic, too, so a youngster can follow along when they're done.No challenging parts to solder, but a lot of resistors and LEDs to install for good practice. My full build video and demo is on YouTube, search for "C.K. builds a Digital Hourglass kit from Gikfun"

I bought this to introduce my 12 yo to soldering. I cut up an extra usb cable to use as the power input. Also, I ended up soldering the CPU/chips myself as they can be temperature sensitive.Otherwise, he was able to solder all the LED/resistors. The connectors were a bit tricky as he had accidentally put solder into the holes so I ended up rescueing it for him with desoldering wick/pump.Most importantly, the instruction sheet was clear and pointed out obvious fail points.I think they should have added wires/connectors for power.Other than that, it's pretty and good practice. As for the negative reviews about not being too useful; NONE of the home soldering projects are reasonably useful. This is a cheap solder practice kit with some pretty lights at the end. Perfect for beginners, hobbyists, and learners. No moving parts means less things to break.Recommended

Nice little practice kit. A lot of soldering. Easy to assemble. You want to get good at soldering, this is what you need.

I purchased this kit for my 10 yr old son, and we spent a few hours together over a weekend putting it all together. This was a follow up project to some simpler soldering projects that had 5-10 components total, so bumping up to 60+ components was a lot of fun.We had no problem following the instructions. There's not a lot of detail, but each step was clear enough to understand what was required. They kind of leave you on your own for the power side, but as other reviewers mentioned, you can use AA, AAA or other sources to power your project. We used two CR2032 in series and bough a small enclosure to hold them separate from the project boards. This was a great project for honing soldering skills, as there are lots of leads to connect, and there are a couple places where precision and placement really matter. Getting the IC's into the board was tricky, but I think that's pretty normal. We loved this project and would highly recommend it! All our components worked (thankfully).

Exactly as described, a modern led version of the classic sand hour glass. The kit works perfectly, just get led polarity correct, and get the chips correct so you don't damage them.Pros:works great. Excellent kit for electronic hobbyists.Tip: there is a 1meg resistor. By changing its value and adjusting the potentiometer the count can be calibrated against a stop watch to seconds minutes hours or even longer. We adjusted ours for 5 minute time to use as a cute kitchen timer.Cons: power supply. We used a modified usbb cable and a phone charger. Batteries would also work.Recommended : absolutely, positively YES!

Bought this as a beginner project kit, I'd never soldered before and didn't really have any past experience or knowledge. The instructions are useless besides trying to squint and follow pictures. The kit doesn't include a battery pack or wires to actually turn on your creation once you're done. I spent 5 hours putting this thing together, I ended up doing a ton of reading online while building this thing because nothing is explained to you in the kit. All in all it was satisfying to turn on my creation after pulling apart an old clipper set to steal it's wiring and battery pack, but it was a very stressful introduction to soldering. For beginners, a project like this would be great, if it had detailed instructions, and for experienced solderers, this is a very basic and pointless project.I'd recommend spending a little bit more money for a better kit. A radio project kit I ordered came in today with full instructions and a booklet that explains the who, what, when, where & why's of soldering. That would have been much better to start with.

I was really looking forward to this kit from all the good reviews, but the directions were a little spotty. There was no 2.2k resistor, the directions kind of skip around in a weird way. Not very organised in the way they are written. Its a fun kit though in the way that you get to do alot of solder points. I noticed something was wrong with the performance of mine even though i followed the directions to a T, so i looked at the pictures of peoples in the reviews and noticed another guy that did one side of the solder resistors in a different directions than the instructions and his worked perfectly which just further confused me even more. Good practice though i guess...

First soldering project. Worked perfect. Instructions are semi broken english, but you can still easily figure out what they are trying to say. Keep in mind this DOES NOT include a power source. I had to cut open a USB cable and solder on the red/black wires for power. Could of used a battery pack but all mine are only 3v from 2 AA batteries. I was given 2 extra LED's, no other extra parts, but everything worked! Took about 3-4 hours on and off to finish it.

Bought a dozen for an electronics club (10-12 years old). Assembly has a few gotchas with orientation of the parts but if you read (look carefully at) the supplied printed instructions (I failed to do that) you should do fine.Definite pros: printed instruction; really cute and daft; cheap!Cons: Power supply not supplied. We used some USB break-out boards and a couple of short pieces of solid core insulated wire. If you don't have the USB break-out, you might just cut the end of an unused or broken (device-end) USB cable, find the 0V and 5V wires and solder them in place.Really a lot of fun. Club members had very few problems that weren't the good kind.

First and foremost- This kit assembled didn't work for me, but it's entirely my fault. I rushed through this kit, and I installed the IC's on the incorrect side of the corresponding PCB- so I effectively put the IC's in backwards. Again, my fault entirely, both PCBs have pretty clear silk screen patterns- which is a bit surprising to me considering how heavily populated they get.So while I can't comment on how this kit functions as a completed unit, I did enjoy putting it together and although the instructions I got were hazy (hazy broken English and hazy from faded printer toner) I never got confused while assembling this. You might be thinking "Never got confused? You put the ICs in backwards!". Again, I was in a rush. I was reminded of some Christmas gift business, and rather than simply stop working on this kit and resume at a less busy time, I rushed through it and in my hurry I just threw the ICs on, noting their orientation but not paying attention to the side of the PCB I soldered them to. A lesson learned that in addition to driving, you should never build electronic devices while distracted I suppose! And touching back on the PCBs, again, they're marked with a easy to read silk screen, and the kit either had just the right amount, or a bit more of the parts needed to make this hourglass. I have numerous other soldering kits to work on at this time (when I'm not distracted, of course!) but I may buy this again one day and assemble it correctly.

A good kit that actually serves a purpose once you’re done. Everything in my kit was quality, it went together well with simple instructions. More of a soldier practice kit than an educational kit like some others, which I enjoyed. If you are looking for a cheap way to practice your skills this is it!
