In so far as my needs are concerned, the Godox X3 Controller represents a giant leap forward in technological innovation, and as a consequence, convenience and workflow pace. I say this by way of a comparison to their previous model controller, the XPro II.One of the new features of convenience on the X3 is that it carries a rechargeable lithium battery on-board; there is no longer a need to carry spare batteries. It can be charged via itโ€™s USB-C port by any number of means in use today; by a phone charging block, computer, a car charger, power bank, etc. It can even be charged while in use. And according to Godox, the battery will last for five days at 1200 shots per day, way longer than a set of batteries lasted in the XPro II. From completely exhausted, the X3 recharges in 2 hours. And then of course, there is the X3โ€™s diminutive size. Its high-definition OLED touch screen is about the size of that of an Apple watch, and it doesnโ€™t weight much more either. The user has the option of using touch screen control of settings and menus or a knob and buttons on the side of the X3. Like the previous models, power of connected lighting can be adjusted individually or as a group. If youโ€™re a ETTL user, you can now use ETTL mode in five groups instead of only three as previously. The settings menu of the X3 is about the same as that of the XPro II, with the exception of a โ€œWireless Syncโ€ setting in the โ€œWirelessโ€ menu. This is a future feature that will allow lights to be connected automatically to the X3, rather than the need to do it manually through the onboard menu system. This function is not currently enabled, but is apparently going to be included in a future firmware update; an update that will need to be applied to both the controller and relevant lighting. This will be another feature of convenience when it does arrive. The OLED touch screen is bright and large enough to be read easily. It is very responsive; accessing menus is controlled with up, down and sideways swipes, and settings are confirmed with a touch. Power adjustments, individually or as a group, can be made with on-screen +/- buttons, by dragging on the screen, or mechanically, by turning the side knob in either direction. When the X3 is powered on, short pushes of the on/off button switch the X3 between the home screen, where the settings and Multi Mode are accessed, and the master control screen, where the user has access to groups and connected lights. If youโ€™ve owned or do own a previous model Godox controller, then the menus will be familiar; in that case, youโ€™ll find using the controller to be intuitive, and simple to get up to speed with preferred settings. What features are no longer included with the X3? One is Bluetooth; the X3 will not have access to the Godox app; in my case I never used it anyway. But for those that do, this may be a consideration. Another discontinued feature, and one I didnโ€™t use either, is the obsolete supplementary AF beam. And there is no longer individual zoom control of connected speedlights; another feature I never used. Individual and group control of modelling lights has remained. Godox has discontinued all of the features that were superfluous to my needs, and likely most others too.As I implied at the beginning, the Godox X3 represents a whole new ball game in terms of convenience and portability. It is small, but with powerful capabilities. Theyโ€™ve trimmed the fat by eliminating features that are rarely used, and made access to those thatโ€™ve remained faster and easier. One feature important to my work is TCM (TTL Converted to Manual) that allows me to use the X3 as a light meter. By using the ETTL mode along with the finely graduated exposure adjustments the X3 makes possible, I can fine tune my exposure to get exactly the histogram Iโ€™m looking for. Then, by tapping on TCM button, those settings are transferred directly to Manual Mode; the mode that I use most often when lighting with strobes. In my opinion, the X3 is an awesome upgrade from Godoxโ€™s previous two wireless light controllers. The X3 embodies all the of the best attributes of those that came before it and is, as far as Iโ€™m concerned, an upgrade worth the expense. The Godox X3 is delivered with a very nice, semi-hard zippered case, a cleaning cloth for the screen, a USB charging cable and a user manual.
