Pilot holes required: Installing delicate screws such as these into hard maple requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend using a No.50 bit for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

I own a Japanese knock-off bass which I purchased 45 years ago. For a cheap bass, i later discovered it’s body is swamp ash, the neck is maple with a rosewood finger board. Over the years, I’ve swapped out just about everything but the tuners as they were solid. After 45 years, it was time to upgrade them as well. I couldn’t justify higher end machine heads for this bass, but these tuners were reasonably priced and Stew-Mac has a solid reputation. I wasn’t disappointed. These tuners are quality tuners that holds my bass in tune very well. For mid- priced machine heads, these work great.

The tuners are soft action with a smooth gearing. No hangups. They look great on my Jazz bass.

I was replacing the cheap open gear tuners on a bass I purchased recently. I wanted quality tuners, but did not want to spend a great deal. The Golden Age tuners operate very smoothly, appear to be very well made, and the chrome plating seems of very good quality. If there is a down side, they are a little on the heavy side, but that was not an issue with this particular instrument. Very pleased with this product!
