Product Description

Matcha Whisk (chasen)

A matcha whisk, also known as chasen represents an important component of matcha tea preparation, especially in Japanese tea ceremonies.

The traditional matcha tool is specially crafted with dozens of bamboo prongs that easily yields a smooth and frothy matcha.

Once you’ve received your new bamboo whisk, we recommend cleaning it before use by soaking it in a chawan bowl (or any bowl) of hot water for about 2 minutes. You might notice that the tines at the core of the bamboo whisk loosen and unfolds a little – this is normal. This will only aid you better in achieving a perfectly blended matcha with a rich layer of foam.

It is also a good practice to soak your bamboo whisk in warm water for a few minutes before every usage as it helps to soften up the bristles and also improve the elasticity of the bamboo whisk.

After use it is recommended to be cleaned by rinsing in clean water.

Why to use a whisk?

You should whisk matcha tea because matcha powder itself hardly dissolves in water. When you add matcha powder to water, you'll notice that small clumps will form. Even stirring matcha with a teaspoon won't help reduce the clumps. Instead, whisking matcha with a purpose built whisk will agitate the clumps and allow the clumps in your matcha green tea to break up.

The individual springy tines of the bamboo whisk work to aerate the powder tea. When the powder tea and water is enriched with oxygen a layer of foam will appear and the aromas and tannins of the tea are released.

Whisking matcha plays a pivotal role in reducing the bitterness and increasing the creaminess and smoothness of this powder green tea.

Missing this important step will reduce your appreciation of even a high grade matcha green tea.

Caring your whisk

Proper care and maintenance of your bamboo whisk can prolong the life of the whisk for up to 12 months or more. Bamboo is very delicate and often the signs that it needs to be replaced are fairly obvious on inspection. Over time, the thin tines of the whisk will break off. However, even with a few broken tines, it is still possible to produce foamy matcha.

How to whisk your matcha?

To whisk matcha effectively will take some practice and a few helpful tips:

  • Season the whisk in hot water for a few seconds so that the tines absorb the water and soften up. Doing this step will give the tines extra spring and lessen the chance of tines breaking.
  • Scoop 1-2g of matcha tea powder into the chawan (Matcha bowl).
  • Start by adding just a small amount of water ( 50 ml ) to the Chawan.
  • Hold the Chawan firmly with one hand and in the first instance start to stir the powder and water combination with few rotations with your whisk. This helps to spread the matcha powder in the Chawan.
  • Next, arch your wrist and whisk as quickly as possible using a W-shapped motion. Take care not to let the whisk tines scrape the bottom of the Chawan.
  • When a layer of foam starts to foam consistently raise your whisk slightly and slow your motions to whisk only the surface of the foam. It will help burst the bigger bubbles in the tea and produce that nice nano foam to give that creamy delicious finish.

I took it out of the container and prongs are very wide, but thought would be okay because I use a large cup for my matcha. The internal prongs came apart on my first use and outer prongs very flimsy. This is a terrible waste of money.

In this time where life is so chaotic and frustrating, I like to partake in the matcha experience once in a while. To do this, you will need a chasen- a bamboo whisk - which is what this listing is for.HOW TO USE THISI have the wide big ceramic bowl for the matcha. I take water and heat it up to 170 degrees.I put the water in the bowl and then set the chasen in the water to soften it up and let it bloom. After a few moments, I dump the water and bring it all to the table.I refill the bowl part way and add the matcha powder through the strainer and press out the lumpsI use the chasen and quickly using the wrist, froth up the matcha until it is blended and foamy. Then I drink it up slowly and enjoy the moment of peace with quiet reflective music.HOW I CLEAN THISWhen it is time to clean up, I simply fill the bowl up with more hot water and quickly whisk the bowl again with the chasen. Once it is cleaned off, I put it on the chasen stand (keeps the form of the chasen intact). I let it dry there until the next use.PERFORMANCEThis bamboo chasen is as nice as my favorite chasen which will need to be replaced soon. This is a decent quality so far.THE BOTTOM LINEThis is a decent chasen with the right amount of spines and works well.MY RATINGFIVE STARS. I get these to last me quite a while by taking care of it after each use. This appears to be nice quality and like it will last as long as my others which I have liked.

It's a fair price for a bamboo whisk. Works perfectly. No reason for it to not work perfectly.ATTENTION TO USERS:- You need to presoak the whisk and let the fibers soften and unfurl a little for about 30 seconds in hot water (Just soak the bottom inch of the whisk, you don't need to soak the handle). Or else it will splinter and it's not the whisk's fault you didn't do that.- Just rinse it clean with water and let it dry or put it on a matcha whisk holder to dry. (Google it, yes it looks a little sus hehe, but it holds the whisk perfectly)- Keep it dry between uses and it will not mold.- These do not last forever, and will begin to crack at the handle eventually. You are supposed to buy a new one. Yes this makes me sad too but nothing else whisks up matcha quite as beautifully and there is something wonderful about making a cup in the traditional manner in the late afternoon so I will continue to buy these forever.

I've been quite the fan of what my BFF calls "mystic voodoo juice" -- normally known as matcha -- for years now. I have always had the powder and the bowl, but somehow I just never got around to buying a whisk... I used an electric milk frother instead, which was all well and good, but it just doesn't produce the same type of smoothness that a whisk does.Be SURE to follow the instructions on this if you want it to last. Whisks like this are easily broken if misused/not treated correctly... you'll want to give it a soak in warm water before each use to soften up the tines and make it less likely to break. It will produce a better matcha this way too.And like other things of a delicate nature, only hand wash. I just whisk it in some warm water and that takes off the excess liquid. Never put it in a dishwasher -- you'll ruin it.The description claims that with proper care, this whisk will last a year. I believe that to be true. I also think that the asking price is reasonable. I won't hesitate to re-order this when the time comes.
