A lot of care went into molding dangerously hot glass into this beautiful 3D ornament. The ornament is heavy and feels sturdy and durable.

After my visit to Salem, MA, I knew I wanted to get a hand blown glass ball (Also known as a witch's ball) for my home. They are beautiful but the ones in downtown Salem are extremely expensive! I found this online and am so happy with it! It looks like the ones in Salem and is beautiful when hanging up. High quality, amazing value, I highly recommend this product!

This beautiful glass ball makes a lovely decoration for placing in front of a window. It’s too heavy in my opinion to be safely put on a Christmas tree, but hung from a hook or an iron display stand it’s a beautiful accent piece. The interior appears to be a hollow tree, which would make the object a toroid, but both ends are closed so it retains a ball shape and is sealed against moisture. This is my 7th ornament/gazing ball/witch ball and, aside from two really large 12” balls, it’s one of the prettiest and easily the heaviest. I have it hanging on an iron hook stand in an east facing window, so hopefully my house is protected from evil! :)

I love this as a witch ball... it is so beautiful and wonderfully made! This ball comes well packaged and is more on the heavy side so it may not do well on a christmas tree. I cannot say enough how beautiful and well made this ball is!This would make a great gift for anyone and for any reason. It looks amazing hanging outside with the sunlight shining thru it - so happy with this witch ball and would highly recommend it to anyone!

First...what is a Witch Ball? " A witch ball is a hollow sphere of glass. Witch balls were hung in cottage windows in 17th- and 18th-century England to ward off evil spirits, witches, evil spells, ill fortune and bad spirits. The witch ball were used to ward off evil spirits in the English counties of East Sussex and West Sussex." (WIKI) Traditionally they were hung in the East facing windows inside or outside the home. What I can tell you is that I live near Salem Mass USA, America's 'Witch City". My first Witch Ball was purchased at a shop there for me as a house warming gift by a friend who knew I was obsessed with them. Many of the shops in Salem sell them. They also sell old fashioned glass fishing net floats which are lighter and don't have the branching inside or fancy coloring. The fishing floats do not have a loop on the top, they were placed inside pockets woven into the fishing nets.So...Witch Balls are beautiful, they will put a smile on your face especially when the sun or a light I shining through them. BUT...they will not take care of your Witch or other evil spirit problems! (LOL) They are a nice way to wish someone peace and beauty in their home. This is one of the smaller Witch Balls I have, but also one of the nicest ones. Good color, and lots of glass branching off the central stem inside the ball. The branches give visual appeal and were suppose to trap the evil spirit. So from a traditional perspective more branches means a better Witch Ball. From a craft perspective, those branches are not easy to produce in a hand blown piece like this. I was gifted a Glass Blowing class to make my own Witch Ball, and was surprised at how difficult it was to get the desired effect even with the hands on help of the expert glass blower teaching the course. The color effect is created by dipping the base color melted glass ball on the end of the blowing wand (the Pontil) into glass pellets of the desired color(s) then ,melting them together. The glass loop at the top of the ball is added using a separate piece of glass before the finished Witch Ball is snapped off of the Pontil. That last part is what results in what some reviewers have referred to as a "scar" or defect on the bottom o the Witch Ball. That is called a Pontil Mark. Virtually ALL hand blown glass will have a mark like this or a remnant if it is pressed or polished out while still malleable to minimize (such as for bottlers or drinking cups). This is your proof that this is indeed a Hand Blown object. Your Witch Ball is a one of a kind piece of glass art. After it is separated from the Pontil it has to temper in a special heated cabinet and cool down slowly. The entire process can take up to 4 days. Not all of the projects make it. Many shatter or crack from heat stress. So that Witch Ball in your hand took skill, workmanship, and a lot of care to get to you.You will need a substantial branch of your Christmas Tree if you want to use this as an ornament. It is quite heavy for it's size. It's not the delicate glass most people think of when they thing of glass tree ornaments. Keep in mind that it is glass and will break if it falls onto a hard surface. In theory they could be hung outside. I have done so in warmer weather on the shady side of my house, but I have never risked leaving them out once things start to freeze up. I also take them in if there is going to be a lot of high wind. You will want to put them away from the more direct sunlight or the hot sunny side of your home. So...East side not South side which is probably where that custom came from.If you are looking for a beautiful housewarming gift with a bit of history behind it, or jut a pretty thing to decorate your own home with you will love this.NOTE: This Witch ball comes with a Twine loop to hang it which is th traditional way to hang them. However I always switch it out for something that will hold top better. Especially of hanging it outside in the elements.
