Product Description

Why design a hand coffee grinder from scratch? - Many hand grinders are difficult to use. We felt like you should enjoy every part of the coffee preperation experience, including the gring.  In order to make this happen we spent over a year trying to wrap our heads around every aspect of coffee culture and the grind process.  We interviewed hundreds of baristas, cafe owners and individual coffee enthusiasts to find out how we could make an improved version of a manual hand coffee grinder.  Our feedback told us that there were 3 main problems with most manual coffee griners.

1) Ease of Use - Most horizontal manual coffee grinders were difficult to use and inconvenient.

2) Consistency - Many grinders struggle to consistently grind beans to a uniform coarseness (particle size).

3) Setup and Tear Down - We were repeatedly told that loading manual coffee grinders and cleaning them after use was negatively affecting their coffee brewing experience.

With this information and a host of peripheral survey data we set out to engineer a new kind of manual grinder.  Our goal was to make a hand grinder that was simple and elegant while being surprisingly durable and easy to use.  We wanted to create something that avoided the major drawbacks of most manual grinders.  With these goals in mind we created the Handground precision manual coffee grinder.

Have your favorite coffee experience with the Handground manual coffee grinder. Whether you enjoy French Press, Pour Over, Cold Brew or regular Drip Coffee, the Handground Manual Coffee Grinder provides you with the ability to precisely grind to your preferred coarseness.

vertical crank manual hand grinder, precision manual burr grinder

Manual Made Easy

Handground is the first portable manual coffee grinder with a side mounted handle. Placing the handle on the side allows for a more natural motion and the ability to place your opposite hand on top of the grinder for stabilization. The handle is made from solid aluminum and complimented by a beautiful pakka wood knob.

Consistent Grind Every Time

Running down the center of Handground is a stainless steel axle that drives the burr mill. The axle is mounted on metal bushings in three locations to keep it stable while grinding and eliminate burr wobble. Each axle is milled on a 5 axis CNC that maintains tolerances of 0.004 inches. The combination of added stability and razor thin tolerances allows Handground to achieve a consistent grind, every time.

Handground's extra wide triton hopper holds 100 grams of beans in 10 gram increments.

Lock And Load

The hopper opens extra wide so loading up to 100 grams of coffee is a breeze. The top locks on with a quarter twist to prevent beans from flying out while grinding. If there isn't a scale available, each measurement mark on the side of the hopper represents ~10 grams of beans.

Grind For Any Brew

We drew inspiration from the focus ring on a camera lens so selecting the right grind size is simple. Twist the numbered ring to setting 1 to produce an espresso grind or 8 for French Press. There is a step in between each number for a total of 15 coarseness settings.

Handground's 40mm conical ceramic burr mill crushes coffee for consistent particle size.

Balanced Speed & Effort

At the heart of Handground is a 40mm conical ceramic burr mill that crushes coffee beans into an even particle size. The geometry of the burr is fine tuned to balance the speed which it grinds and the torque required to turn the handle. The result is that grinding takes just the right amount of effort in the right amount of time.

It is beautifully made and grinds coffee to the exact fine ness required from expresso to filter. I use it every day to grind the coffee I’ll use that day as coffee tastes better freshly ground. A really lovely machine; it looks great out on the worktop too.

This is a decent, streamlined coffee bean grinder. The gripper on the bottom is extremely helpful. It does not grind effortlessly though. If you can afford to keep a larger grinder on your counter top, and if your budget allows, you should consider the electric models.I guess the grinding mechanism is the expensive component in this product, because the glass and plastic and handle parts are all average. I'm not comparing this grinder with others--as there is a whole range of prices out there to choose from. Some grinders are way more expensive than this one. But all together, in person, this grinder does not look as expensive as it is.

I have only had this for two weeks, so cannot speak to its durability. However, I rate the usability very high. The side crank is very effective and overall one does not need much strength to operate. The device is easy to keep clean. The base has a sticky layer on it, so the grinder will not slide on the countertop while using. The 15 settings are a nice touch and overall the grounds are consistent.I did have a problem with a slight defect in the bottom container. However, the manufacture was extraordinarily prompted in sending a replacement. Great to see a company that stands behind its product.Update Feb 2019:I have had this since March 2018, using it 2-3 times/week. Up to now there have been no breakage, everything continues to work perfectly. I have no idea why others complain of missing screws or stripped gears but I have noticed as a computer repair man (ex-) that for some people devices are always breaking. I also have a French Press bought on Amazon that reviewers complain that the glass shell cracks too easily or the strainer leaks grounds. As they say: it's a poor workman who blames his tools. At any rate, this grinder is a pleasure to use, it forms part of the morning coffee ritual. I prefer this small, light-weight device that uses muscle power versus a noisy, heavy electric grinder that takes up valuable work area space. Grinding effort is minimal; keeping a hand on top of the unit while grinding keeps it perfectly stable (how can others be having so much trouble coordinating left and right hands). The control for determining the size of the grounds is clear and easy to set. Cleaning the grinding burrs (once a month) is simple - handground.com gives clear instructions regarding that.As I said earlier, the company stands behind their product. One can tell from their website that they love coffee, love their customers, love to impart coffee knowledge, and do what they can to ensure customer satisfaction. There is nothing I can find to complain about; seldom do I find a purchase that so easily gives full satisfaction.Update 2025:Still working, the gears in the top piece (with the crank) are still in excellent shape. I use this probably 3-4 times a week. Seven years life span with no end in sight. By the way, I contacts customer support after the first weeks of ownership for a minor cosmetic blemish. Great response from C.S., very generous. Grinder performs beyond expectation.

The Handground coffee grinder is the top-of-the-line coffee grinder. I love that you can dial the grind you want. I love the side-mounted lever to operate the grinder. I love their website that has many, many recipes to grind & brew coffee. Expensive, but worth it. Well done to the entrepreneurs who researched & made this device.11-Oct-2017I have owned the Handground coffee grinder for nearly 4 months and highly recommend it. It has transformed my coffee-drinking experience. Let me tell you how.(Side note: go to the Handground web site & read the story of how they developed it using crowd-sourcing ideas. The founders worked hard to incorporate the best of all the suggestions. Fantastic!)Here is what I love about the Handground coffee grinder.First, the grinding handle is on the side rather than the top. Duh! Much easier to use.Second, the grinding burr is securely mounted in two points so you get a CONSISTENT grind. Inconsistent grind bothered me with my old grinder as I could see the burr move from side to side in the grinding chamber so the coffee was not ground consistently.Third, they have calibrated the burr so you can easily select how coarse or fine you want the coffee grounds. You simply turn the dial to the coarseness you want. The dial moves with a nice ‘click’ from setting to setting. Let me talk more about this.I brew coffee several different ways. Sometimes I want an Americano so I grind the coffee fine. Sometimes I make a pour-over and the coffee needs to be slightly coarser. Sometimes I use my Chemex knock-off, coarser still. Last I may use my French Press or Clever Dripper, very coarse.Try making those different grinds with your normal coffee grinder. It frustrated me. I had to turn the nut on the spindle to adjust the burr in the grinding chamber, but how many times do I turn it? And in which direction? Where was it set before? Was my last brew an expresso or a pour-over? If I want to use my French Press do I spin the nut five times or four times or three times? Which way do I turn it, by the way?I would hold my grinder up to my face so I could peer down into the grinding chamber to see how small the opening was in the chamber. Is that fine enough? Maybe one more twist. No that’s too fine, back a half-twist. It was truly a hit-or-miss exercise.Handground removes all that frustration. It has 15 different settings, 1 through 8 with a half-step between the whole numbers. Do I want an espresso grind? I dial 1.5. Do I want a pour-over? I dial 4. Am I making a French Press? I dial 7. This is easy and consistent.I’ve had so much fun with the Handground. Their web site lists 66 different ways to brew coffee using an AeroPress (within a Handground, of course). My co-worker & I have spent 3 months trying each method plus some variations of our own. We’ve had a lot of fun and have learned a lot about brewing coffee. You could never do these ‘experiments’ without an accurate, consistent coffee grinder.Last, attention to detail & customer support has been fantastic. When you buy the device they include a very, very thin washer. Why? If the ‘1’ setting does not grind the coffee fine enough for you, you can insert this thin washer into the mechanism to make the grind just slightly finer. Wow! Also, I lost the nut that holds the burr onto the spindle. (Don’t ask me how - I have no idea.) After contacting Support they set me a replacement thumb nut. Excellent!I thoroughly enjoy my Handground coffee grinder and unconditionally recommend it. It is worth the price if you like to grind your own coffee.

This is bigger than I thought but that's good. You can grind enough in one go for 5 or more people to have espresso. It's solid, built from quality materials and beautifully crafted. Buy this, and not a poorly designed fancy electronic grinder that you can't use when the power goes out. You can get this grinder to grind fine enough for espresso by installing the two calibration washers. It won't grind for espresso out of the box but worth the effort to install the washers. There is a video on their website with step by step instructions. Would buy it again but I probably won't need to because it's simple and well built and will likely last a lifetime.
