This thing is very similar to compressed air horns. It works great if you want something that is reusable forever. I will caution you, there isn't really a "half way" volume. I have tried to push it half as hard to keep it a little quieter and it just doesn't make a noise. You have to pushing it fast to make it work any it comes out LOUD.This would be perfect for boating, we use it for shotgun starts in golf. If you use this at a sporting event, in close proximity to a crowd, you will scare the pants off of them. Ask me how I know. :)

Every once in a while, an occasion arises on which I need to make some loud, annoying noise. In the past, I've had air horns that were powered by canned compressed air. They work fine, but they eventually run out of air and go in the trash. This one solves that problem. One quick pump of the plunger with your hand and you're making some noise. It is LOUD, which is the point. And the tone is very close to some more-expensive air horns I've had in the past. Everything about it is well-made. All of the air from the plunger goes out the horn (no leaks I can detect), and the plunger doesn't wobble around while you're pushing it. The horn threads securely onto the canister. My only complaint - a very small one - is the size. Because the plunger needs room to operate, when assembled, it's 14+" long. Even disassembled, the two pieces are each about 8". You're not going to put this in a pants pocket and walk into your kid's graduation. Your wife will need to carry her big purse. Again, this is a necessary compromise to make the hand plunger work; and is a small price to pay for the long-lasting, loud performance of this horn. I'm satisfied with this horn, and if you need to make some noise, I think you will be, too.

This product does have almost all of its advertised qualities. Using a decibel meter app on my iPhone, I measured its volume at 120 db from a distance of a couple of feet within the same room when firmly pressed, and 100 db from the opposite end of the next room in the house.Just as advertised, it is hand-operated, and infinitely reusable. I have no doubt it would produce the amount of sound expected by anyone with a need for a product of this type and it is certainly reasonably priced for what it is.My only reason for deducting a star is that I do NOT agree with the advertised claims that it is “easy to carry” or “ideal….during activities like jogging” and it is certainly NOT “easy to carry in a … pocket.” (In fact unless you have some sort of super deep and wide pocket, I would say it is not POSSIBLE to carry in a pocket). When fully assembled and in the “ready to pump” position (which is how you would need to have it if planning to rely on it as a personal safety device), it’s actually about a foot and a half long! (See photo next to my standard 12-inch ruler). While it is certainly very lightweight, I as a runner would definitely not find it convenient to carry an object of this size with me while running / jogging, and that was a disappointment to me as I was hoping to use it as a deterrent for javelina and other wildlife that I sometimes encounter while running.

We live out in the country surrounded by forest and have a family of deer that likes to graze in our yard. We would like to keep Lyme's carrying deer ticks out of our yard as much as possible, so have tried a variety of things to encourage the deer to leave. My husband purchased a canned air horn for deterring bear earlier this year and found it to be fairly effective in shooing the deer away until alas, it ran out of air, so it's off to the landfill for that horn. (Yes it's used frequently as the deer usually come by daily if not several times a day.)I got this pump horn as a replacement. It is just as loud as the canned air horn and as long as it holds up will help us keep our local deer family at bay.It came in two parts, but was very easy to assemble and use. The horn sounds as you pump air into the canister. The pump action slides smoothly and is easy to push. The horn part is made of hard plastic parts that are glued together, so I'm not sure how durable it will be over time. (The star rating reflects this.)Over all I recommend this air horn if you're looking for a manually pumped horn that's loud and easy to use.As a side note, it's made in China.
