Great idea but the adjustment of the opening gets a little finicky. Otherwise a descent product

I usually just find a plastic cup or a large container used for margarine or yogurt to scoop up my sand to spread around our property. When I saw this Ice Bully I thought "What the heck". Delivery was prompt and it was already assembled so I took out to see how well it would work for me. I live in a rural area in Maine so I get a lot more snow on my property than I did when I rented an apartment in the city. The Ice but has been working really well for me. I sometimes wish the adjustable hinged flap was gone but since I'm using it for sand, I find it some times gets in my way, but that's an easy fix. I can spread a lot more sand in a very short period of time and once I'm done I don't have to worry that me, my family or anyone coming to visit us, might slipon the snow and ice. I got two so I can keep them in separate sand boxes to cover a larger area without constantly going back to refill from one source.Nice product, no doubt.

It seemed like a good idea. While using it, I felt like I made a horrible decision. The handle is slippery and wanted to fly out of my hand. The flap doesn't really work in a productive way. To load it with the salt or calcium takes way too much time, and if it's bound together in clumps, this thing won't break them down and if the clumps are in the chamber, it will rattle around and be useless. The handle is assembled in a very flimsy way with thin sheet metal that snapped off at the bottom during my first use of the product. I regret wasting money on such a cheaply made product with poor design and craftsmanship. Made in China, sold to us in the US. We're morons for wasting money on this junk.

I bought this along with a plastic competitor in hopes that it would be sturdier and easier to use with the trap door style loading mechanism. Unfortunately, it turned out to be worse in almost every way. It's still usable, but I definitely wouldn't recommend spending more money on what is generally a less useful product. For starters, the metal build, while seemingly attractive compared to plastic, is actually just riveted sheet metal and the handle easily flexes in your hand, with several sharp edges. And since it's metal, it sucks the heat from your hand in subzero temperatures. The plastic spreader? Completely solid, and insulates from the cold. Not only do they weight roughly the same, but the Ice Bully has the handle on the back while the plastic version has the handle centered over the scoop for better ergonomics. As for the metal trap door that some reviewers said allows you to plunge it into the loading bucket? It doesn't work well, if at all, for salt crystals. Attempting to vertically plunge it into a bucket of salt results in instant jamming. You have to scoop from the side in order to collect anything, which is even more difficult with the handle in the back of the scoop and the resulting length. As the loading bucket empties, it's almost impossible to get much salt out. With the plastic scoop, you can you unscrew the lid and use the lid itself as a mini scoop to take salt out of the bucket and pour it into the cylinder, which is much easier to do and faster, especially with a half empty bucket. The plastic scoop also holds more. And lastly, as for the adjustable door on the Ice Bully? It jammed up immediately while dispersing regular sized snow salt, and adjustments require a hex wrench. With the plastic version, it's tool-less and you just rotate the dial to adjust the orifice size. Overall, I had high hopes for this product but it needs to go through a few more revisions if they want it to be a viable competitor to the high quality plastic alternatives.

I was hoping I could push it down into the salt in a bucket and pull it out kind of full. But that didn’t work because the salt was too tightly packed in the bucket, maybe in a bag that would work. The handle is a little weird to hold, but works. Overall it works a lot better than other scoops, it is longer so you get a nice spread and the door flap doesn’t let too much out at once.

I use this for spreading salt and sand on my driveway during the winter. The ability to just dip this into the bucket to refill it saves time and frozen fingers (vs having to unscrew the top of some other spreaders). It's also very sturdy which gives me confidence it will last for a long time.

Finally had our first snowfall here in Minnesota and let me just say I'm so happy I got this thing. So light, so much salt can fit inside and the pointed tip allows for super easy scooping. First time I have seen the adjustable door, but let me tell you the even coverage it produces is amazing. Disappointed I didn't have this in the past but so happy to have it now. 100% recommend and looking forward to using this all year long!
