These are hand forged, stainless steel painting knives from Seki City in Japan. This area of Japan was settled by master sword makers nearly 800 years ago, due to an abundance of natural resources for metal working. Each knife is hand forged from one piece of steel. The 1066S series has a rust proof coating that makes them suitable not only for oil colors but also waterbased media like watersoluble oils and acrylics. They are tempered for good bounce and flexibility. They will become more flexible and a bit thinner with use (and therefore a bit sharper as well). Unlike cheaper knives that will flake, rust, and chip with use, these knives will last and last if taken care of properly. A superb tool for the artist who appreciates the finest in art materials.

It is worth the price because the cheap palette knives get rusty and eventually pill off. Very well made, the description on the website is confusing but this type the blade itself is approx. 3.6 inches long and 1.1 inches at the widest point, and the handle approx. 7inches so it is a larger knife. I hope this info helps so you don't have to return it.

Holbein painting knives are expensive for a reason--they are the best knives made for painting in oils. And they are worth it. Do yourself a favor and invest in the only knives you will ever need.

Expensive but long-lasting, beautifully-made perfect tool to mix oils. Fits your hand like a glove and is so nimble when mixing it is like spreading butter.
