I used this tap to thread the base of a .308 cartridge to use the hornady OAL case gauge. It worked, but was difficult to start threading straight due to the tip not having much taper, this is a blind hole bottoming tap. If you have a drill press and can hold the tap perfectly at a 90deg to get it started, that would help. A tap with a taper would work better, but this was the only 5/16 x 36tpi tap I could find anywhere.
