Not fair for me to rate this gouge before using it. But there's only one opportunity to make a good first impression . . . and they didn't. Eventhough I expected to have to regrind to my preferred Ellsworth, I expected better of the factory fingernail. It was uneven, not smooth, and not sharp. I'll rate again after grinding a usable edge and turning a bowl.Okay -- editing up to a 4. It takes an edge alright; but it's weight does not match my Sorby. So I won't be using it for roughing. But it performed decently on a manzanita burl full of voids. Worth the 40 bucks.

Great tool. I does great at cutting end grain, and leaves a smooth finish. I recommed it to anyone turning bowls.

I have been using these for a year now and am very pleased. All of them are made well and work well. They take a sharpening pretty easy.

These are really good quality for the price, the finish on the handle is really the only iffy part. For the price, you can make yourself a really nice handle if it bothers you that much and still save. Nice solid steel bar stock, seems to take a good edge. This was the first bowl gouge I bought, and I'd probably recommend someone else buying their first one to get the 1/2" version first. If you've only ever had cheap junk like the HF gouges, this is a huge step up.

I was very excited when my bowl gouge came, because it was my first turning tool and I couldn't wait to start on some bowls. the first two bowls I made came out great with no trouble at all, except that the grind wasn't consistent all around after I sharpened it. I realized this was because the channel that was cut in the steel wasn't placed right or something, I'll post pictures. this didn't bother me, as it had no effect on my turning. unfortunately, tonight I was turning my third bowl at a low speed and out of nowhere the tool snapped clean in half. I immediately turned my lathe off and found the piece. I then proceeded to examine the bowl for a catch, or something that would have caused this to happen. I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, and my tool rest was close enough to the bowl. I am hoping to be refunded, or have a replacement sent to me. I liked the tool before it broke, and would enjoy having another one in the shop. it is a great inconvenience since the bowl I was turning was green wood (another reason it shouldn't have broke) and a natural edge. this was my only bowl gouge and I needed to finish the bowl tonight since it will start to warp before I can get it to the right thickness and finish it. it was really going to be a nice piece.UPDATEafter getting in contact with The Woodturning Store, they said that they would send a replacement. i changed the 1-star review to a 5-star because the tool worked great for a beginning wood turner like me, who couldn't afford a Robert Sorby. it stayed sharp and i like their natural-wood handles. I hope to buy more tools from them in the future
