Types of Steel We Use in Our Wood Turning Tools
High Speed Steel (HSS)
Our High Speed Steel wood turning tools are designed for the beginning to intermediate woodturner but are also great for experienced turners that want a high quality tool at an affordable price.
They feature excellent edge-holding ability and will last 8x longer between sharpenings as compared to carbon steel.
M2 High Speed Steel
Wood turning tools made with M2 High Speed Steel offer superior toughness, wear-resistance and edge-holding compared to standard HSS. They will hold an edge longer, which means more turning and less sharpening!
We offer standard M2 HSS tools as well as cryogenically treated options for even greater performance.
All Hurricane M2 HSS Wood Turning Tools will ship pre-sharpened, so they can be used right out of the box!
M2 Cryo High Speed Steel
Hurricane offers cryogenically treated options within our M2 HSS line of wood turning tools.
All Hurricane Cryo Tools are triple-temper heat treated before being cryogenically frozen to provide each tool with superior edge-holding ability.
The process of cryogenically treating wood turning tools all increases wear-resistance by 3X vs. non-cryogenically treated tools!
M42 Cryo High Speed Steel
M42 High Speed Steel is a step up from M2. It is the highest quality wood turning tool that we offer and is ideal for seasoned wood turners and professionals.
M42 is a premium cobalt high speed steel with superior hardness, wear resistance and edge-holding ability. As a premium option, all of our M42 Steel tools are cryogenically treated.
The cutting edges on wood turning tools made from M42 high speed steel stay sharp and hard in heavy-duty and high production cutting applications such as turning wood on a lathe.

Bowl Gouges
Hurricane Bowl Gouges are perfectly designed for use on wood lathes for a variety of turning projects. Each bowl gouge is machined from round bar stock in diameters of 5/8", 1/2" and 3/8". Our bowl gouge offering includes tools made from HSS, M2 HSS or M42 HSS. Beyond these, we also offer many cryogenically treated options!
Spindle Gouges
Hurricane Spindle Gouges are used for detail work such as coves and beads in spindle turning work. They are available in 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" diameter tools and are ideal for use on wood lathes.
Spindle Roughing Gouges
Hurricane Roughing Gouges are used specifically for spindle turning. Many wood turners use this tool to knock the corners off of square stock in spindle turning. Our roughing gouges are available in 1" and 2" widths both with a thickness of 1/5".
Never to be used for bowl turning.
Skew Chisels
The skew chisel is often considered challenging to use, but once mastered, will give a smooth finish unlike any other wood turning tool. Hurricane Skew Chisels can be used for planing, cutting beads, pommels and more. We offer skew chisels in widths from to 1/2" to 1 1/2".
Scrapers
Hurricane offers several varieties of scrapers for wood turning in widths from 1/2" to 1 1/2" and in thicknesses from 1/4" to 3/8". Our scrapers are available in many shapes, including round nose, square, curved and for cutting dovetails in bowl bottoms.
Parting Tools
While we do offer several specialty parting tools, Hurricane Parting Tools generally have a diamond shape with a cross section which allows for a reduction in friction of the tool against the sides of your workpiece. Our parting tools are ideal for a variety of projects on the wood lathe.

I was using small scrappers but got a lot of chatter and vibration. With this one you can get some work done. It is nice and steady and leaves a smooth cut. I did grind a relief along the lower edge to get into smaller openings.

I would like to have the bevel extend all the length of the longer side of this tool. However I suppose one could grind it to make it that way. Perhaps it doesn't need to. Nice heavy blade gives one a sense of confidence applying it. I'm happy.

This is a large, well made, chunk of quality high speed steel mounted in a nicely finished hardwood handle. Mine gets a lot of use in bowl turning. Hurricane tools have become my choice for reasonably priced, quality, high-speed steel wood turning tools. They’re US-made, and far superior in quality to the cheap Asian imports in the marketplace. I’ve got three Hurricane scrapers, two bowl gouges, and three spindle gouges.

after watching pros use similar scrapers for bowl turning, I decided to purchase one and give it try and I should say that I'm delighted with how effective it is. the tool is heavy and solid, which reduces vibration and it does a great job at what it is intended for. I decided on this brand because its price was reasonable, and the reviews were good, and I am not disjointedness. I highly recommend this tool.

This is a really hefty chunk of steel, and combined with the large handle it gives a really smooth and stable cut while allowing for plenty of precision. This is a great tool for cleaning up tool marks and tear-out, especially if you're a bit rough with your bowl gouge like I am.As with most of the hurricane turning tools, the only flaw is the finish on the handle, but that's nitpicking territory for the price.

I have a number of Hurricane products and all of them are first rate. Like most lathe tools, I reshaped this scraper to better fit my personal needs and turning style. I find that this scraper holds an edge quite well even though I put a negative rake on it. The steel is a reasonable grade and takes to the grinding process well. This is a hefty tool best used on large turnings.
