For years I bought case lots of the Hot Hands toe and hand warmers (under both that brand name and their other name). I needed them in bulk because I wrestle with Renaud’s syndrome. Not only would I use them almost daily during the winter, I’d often feel that chill wrapping around my toes and fingers during the shoulder seasons.Five years or so ago, however, I hit the wall on buying uncompostable, single use items packed in unrecyclable, uncompostable plastic. I kicked my hot hands habit and bought rechargeable hand warmers, microwavable bundles that can be tucked into boots or mittens, and a set of beaver skin pads that tuck into socks, mittens and hats. Those tools are perfect until the temps don’t drop below, say, 10 degrees. It’s for that reason that I got so excited when I found an advertisement for this product. I was thrilled that someone had developed toe warmers that could be composted and re-used, even if the packaging itself ultimately has to go into the landfill. I bought a bag of 20 last week and oh, what a disappointment. It was a total bust. I was outside doing chores for about 45 minutes and felt no warmth at all. Back inside, I peeled them off my socks - there was no discernible warmth at all.Worse, Ignik's packaging and website crow about their customer service and making things right so I emailed them directly with all of this info. I didn't hear a word from them.* updateCustomer service responded before this review went live, so it was definitely a response to my email, just slower than I expected. The things I learned from Customer Support is that: (1) if the warmers feel stiff rather than supple, it means that the packaging has failed. I’ve now opened two units and both were stiff, not supple. (2) the manufacturer can control Amazon’s inventory and so has no ability to control the expiration date on any product. The customer receives. My package has an expiry only six months out, so they haven’t expired yet, but they don’t even have a years worth of shelf life left. (3) the package says to let the warmers sit out for 10 minutes before tucking them into your shoes. Customer service said they should be left out for 20 minutes before expecting any warmth. That’s a lot of time, but I tried it with a second (stiff) packet yesterday and while it’s not producing anything like the warmth one needs to expects from a warmer, it wasn’t nothing. (4) Customer Support did offer to send me replacements for any that are bad in the bag, so they are honoring their promise for sure. The problem is that I don’t wanna try to activate every single packet within this bag so it’s definitely going back to Amazon but I’m gonna give the company another try, this time by ordering directly.

I like these and they last a long time. You can reuse them after putting them in the pouch. They lose a star because a few of the packs in the box I just purchased were warm...meaning they had been sealed improperly and are not usable to me.

I find other disposable foot warmers to often be too hot. These are a gentler quite prolonged heat which I really like. Must follow instructions & allow non-adhesive side to be exposed to air x10 minutes before placing on your foot and into shoe or boot - or you won't think these work well. Ingredients are activated by oxygen, they need time to initiate before going inside a shoe or boot which has very little oxygen. More important to give the 10 minutes than with other brands I have used but in my opinion well worth the wait. You do have to plan a bit ahead though for this 10 minutes and best to place them non-adhesive side up to get the oxygen.I have gotten very successful 2nd even 3rd uses, by zip locking and bleeding out air. But again need to repeat the 10 minute air exposure before using. I will even freeze them in their zip lock after bleeding out all the air I can to prolong useable life if not going to use soon again.I really like that they can safely return to the earth, I would suggest cutting and dumping only the contents onto the ground, and placing white "holder" in trash, since that's probably the part that's not fully recyclable. I have researched in depth other brands for ability to dump on the earth but if you really look into it they say must be disposed of in the trash. There must be something more than iron and vermiculite in other brands.

Take a long time to heat up, do NOT get super hot so you can walk around in them, thin, soft, sticky (if you want), don't stay super warm because the lack of oxygen in your shoes.**They take the edge of being cold, but do not work like the hand warmers do. They DO NOT GET SUPER HOT. **

Used a few of these during xc skiing this year and was dissapointed. Once out of the package, these take longer than you'd expect to warm up. Also they get less hot than other similar products.

I do a lot of winter hiking, backpacking and camping and was tired of using the other brands. I thought I would give these a try. They do get hot, but not so hot that they burn you like others (at least for me it has not yet.) I love that they give you a sealable pack so if you don't use it all the 1st use, you can put it back into the back and seal it up for re-use later. I have done this multiple times. These are also in my car's emergency kit!
