I almost purchased one of these yesterday, at my local music store. I was thinking of trading my Ibanez SR300E (only a week old) for this rocket red Frankenbacker.... (Fenderbacker?). I brought my SR with me to the store, so I could make a fair comparison. The red Jackson is certainly a stunner ; it looks awesome, especially if you are a fan of the color red. I played it for about 15 minutes, going through all sorts of licks, fills, and song fragments. I played low on the neck, in the middle, and high up. Initially I thought it was pretty cool. The neck seemed fairly slick and fast, and the variety of tones seemed sufficient. Then I plugged my SR in... I could immediately tell that the Jackson was not worth $350 more dollars than my SR. I got more (and punchier) tones out of my SR, and the neck is slimmer and faster. If I hadn't brought my SR with me, for a side to side, I may have actually bought it. I'm glad I brought it; I saved myself $350 dollars. Another thing I noticed is where I place my right thumb while playing. I place it on the end of the neck p/u. The SR pickups have a nice, smooth square edge. The Jackson has a screw in the middle, which juts out, and is not comfortable against my thumb. The bottom line is this; it is a decent bass, but it doesn't match what I already have in my SR.
