Not sure what some of the complaints are about. Mine is lightweight metal, not plastic. It attached to my lens easily and tightened with no issues. When mounted on my tripod, it mounted securely and I am not worried to use my camera with this attached. Great value for the money - matches the grey color of my lens almost perfectly.

The item arrived in relatively poor packaging however it wasn't damaged. THE UNIT IS MADE OF PLASTIC. Some people have said that it is made of metal and it does have a specked metal finish however it is plastic. The color does match the lens well and it seems to stay in place. For $10 it is certainly a good buy and a must have for any photographer.

...This product was erroneously recommended by Amazon for my canon EF 70-300 4-5.6 L USM UD lens. Contrary to other reviews this collar mount is not made mostly of plastic. It is solid metal encased in plastic and is quite heavy for it's size. I don't know how sturdy it is when used with the appropriate lens but I can say that the locking mechanism has some looseness to it when fastened so that could result in the lens sliding around inside the mount. If I had a lens with a different collar diameter that this mount was designed for I would definitely consider this collar mount because of it's cost and sturdy design. Alas I can only return this item (which is a snap thanks to amazon) and hope the manufacturer creates one with a larger diameter to fit my canon EF 70-300 4-5.6 L USM UD lens.

I have a Canon ring for my 400 mm L series lens that I have been swapping back and forth between my Canon 70-200 L series lens and the 400 L series lens.I have been wanting to purchase another Tripod Mounting collar ring for quite some time, but I hated the idea of paying Canon's Bloated Price for it.The other day on a whim, I did a quick search of ebay and Amazon.com for a mounting ring. I came across the Cowboy mounting ring and it's very low price. I read all of the reviews and decided to order one to see how good it is. The mount came in the mail today and I could not be any happier! The mounting ring is 100% made of Aluminum, except for the rubber material that is mounted inside the lens ring to protect the lens and to hold it from shifting. The ring fits every bit as tight as the Original Canon ring, it operates as smoothly and the finish is every bit as good; except for one thing.....it is a touch to white in color to match the L series lens color. Perish the Thought! OMG! The Color is slightly off between my lens and it's mount! OMG! Now the photo gods are not going to allow me to take any more beautiful photos because of the mismatch! I guess I am doomed to go photo less for the rest of my life (or at least until I buy a Canon mount). Hey, I know what I'll do! I'll cover everything with Camouflage for wildlife photos. or I'll only take photos after dark, so the camera fashion police don't see me!All in all, I feel that I made a dog-gone good buy on this product!

Pros:- Good fit for my lens (Canon 70-200 F/4 L USM)- Stable fit on the tripod- Reasonably well built, not flimsy, made of metal- Light weight- Matches the colour of my lens- soft paper lining on the inside to avoid scratches on the lens.Cons:- Lacks the canon brand stamped on it (?)Really, could not find any cons with this piece.A little background: I am a hobbyist/ recreational photographer, and the 70-200 F/4 is my most used lens. (about once a week outdoors on a trekking trip, and couple of times indoors). Before buying a tripod mount, on my tripod the camera would invariably tend to "give" over to the lens end a little - so that what I saw through the viewfinder and what I clicked were not always the same frame.(maybe my tripod was not so tolerant of mistakes, ha ha ! ). By the time I straightened up and clicked the trigger, the lens would have slid down a couple of degrees. Needless to say, any long exposures came out blurry !After putting the tripod mount on, the camera is very nicely balanced (I can stand the camera-and-lens on a flat surface on the mount only, and it doesn't topple over). its really lightweight and I always have it on my lens !Another advantage of having this is, I can easily loosen it and turn my camera ninety degrees for a vertical shot. Much easier than when the camera was attached to the tripod - in fact, my tripod does not support loads very well when the ball head is turned all the way to the side for a portrait orientation.I have had this for three months now - and it is sturdy enough for my type of use. Even though I haven't had a chance to use the original canon model, I can't imagine why I would like to pay a whopping one hundred and fifty dollars for that one! Even for a pro photo-g, I don't know if this part would need to be any more solid than this - you wouldn't be constantly taking this off, refitting it on another lens, would you? At one-tenth the price, this does its job very well !Also, for those concerned with aesthetics - this has a good paint job too, matches with the lens colour, and texture too .. doesn't stand out as an "extra" at all..(04/2011)
