Josh's Frogs BioBedding Desert Bioactive Substrates

The perfect substrate for desert bioactive enclosures

BioBedding Desert is the perfect substrate for your desert or arid bioactive enclosure. This substrate is a unique blend of ingredients designed to jump-start the bioactive environment. It helps to maintain a low level of humidity, yet retains moisture in a way to easily provide humid hides and support a community of cleaner invertebrates and beneficial organisms.

It is ideal for:

  • Leopard Geckos and Fat Tail Geckos
  • Bearded Dragons and Uromastyx
  • Semi-Arid Monitors, Savannah Monitors
  • California king snakes and other arid king snakes; Western hognose snakes
  • Hermann’s, Greek, and Russian Tortoises (Testudo species), Pancake tortoises (Malacochersus tornieri)
  • Dairy Cow and Giant Canyon isopods
  • Blue Death Feigning beetles, arid tarantulas, and desert dwelling scorpions
  • Succulents and Cacti, such as Aloe, Sempervivum, Crassula, and other non-spikey semi-arid and arid plants

Setup and Maintenance

 'Shield Tail Agama'

Care:

  • This substrate does not require a drainage layer
  • Do not place a heating pad on the bottom of the tank with this substrate

Instead, add water underneath a humid hide every 1-2 months, as needed, to keep the bottom layer moist. Over time, the top layer will develop a crust due to the mist/dry cycle. Mist very lightly every day, ensuring to mist the substrate under the hide directly.

How to Prep For:

Semi-arid species

For semi-arid species, such as leopard or fat tail geckos, place 1 inch of BioBedding Desert on the floor if your enclosure. Add a small amount of dechlorinated or R/O water until the bottom inch of the substrate sticks together when squeezed, but no water runs out. Then, add another 2-3 inches of dry BioBedding Desert on top. More can be used to facilitate digging in burrowing species.

Full sand/high desert species

Stir the surface of BioBedding Tropical every 1-2 weeks with a fork, or if waste is visible. Burying waste allows microfauna to process it more quickly. Change the substrate when it begins to break down - typically after several years.

While there are some concerns of reptiles ingesting sand and causing impaction issues, we have not found this to be an issue. We recommend using a feeding dish or feeding your reptile outside of the enclosure to avoid this.

Josh's Frogs is the largest breeder of Poison Dart Frogs in the United States and we also breed many other amphibians and reptiles besides Poison Dart Frogs. We have successfully housed and bred many desert species (all animals pictured in listing are from our facility!) on this substrate and 3 years of product testing went into Biobedding Desert before being released to the public. This is a tried and true, natural substrate for many desert species.

I have a leopard gecko..around 7months old. This isnt a dusty substrate, holds up well and isopods like it. Gecko loves it as it keeps its structure after digging pretty well.Read the instructions as you dont need a drainage layer which is freaking awesome.

After having my leopard gecko’s biotank setup and active for almost a year now, I noticed the substrate was looking shallow. I purchased this because it’s highly rated in a biotank group I’m in. I really like the texture of this dirt. I just gently mixed it into the very top layer of the tank so I wouldn’t disturb the cleanup crew. If you look along the side of the tank you can see the newly added layer. This is a 40 gl long, it was enough to add another inch or two to half of the tank so I am wishing I had purchased the larger bag that was available.
