The U-BASS is strung with proprietary strings that incorporate a great bass feel with balanced tension. The U-BASS is a true pleasure to play, and the tone that these instruments produce is amazing. It's an inexpensive bass that's fun to play. But, the first time I plugged the amp wire in the outlet came loose, it won't work stably. Crack I'm the head. I guess I see it as a toy more than a serious instrument which it could have been.

This little bass is amazing!!! It has fantastic sound. My son plays the bass guitar and asked for one of these for Christmas. We got this one at a great price. He has been playing it everyday. It sounds almost exactly like his bass guitar but it is super tiny. We love it.

It's a great little guitar, the strings take getting used to and are slightly difficult to slide on. I planned to use this as my travel guitar and played it the first week I got it and then barely touched it since. It's fun to play especially when it's plugged in (it sounds fantastic). A bit pricy to be honest but a very nice product overall.

I purchased this as a present for a musician friend and fortunately I tried it out before giving it to him. When I connected the bass to an amp it produced no sound, and on examination I noticed a loose wire inside the body. By removing the tuner/control unit from the side of the body i found it was the wire from the pickup to the unit which was not plugged in. The bass now works fine and is as described by other reviewers but I am very disappointed that an Amazon supplier sends out what is a relatively expensive instrument without even checking if it is in working order.

I've seen a lot about KALA U-Basses and I guess maybe I should have done my research a little better, or maybe they just all suck. I don't know. It doesn't hold it's tuning so after every song you have to re tune the strings (and this is after I've had it and broken in the strings like they recommend). As well I hope these strings never break or wear out because I don't think there is any way to replace them. Most U-Basses I see have trap doors on the reverse so you can feed the strings into the body but this model does not. With how these strings feed into the bass I'm not sure how they put them in to begin with, but I'm definitely not going to be able to change them myself. The built in tuner is inaccurate and the intonation is off. But of course there's no truss rod or anything else for adjusting that. Even after several months of daily play the rubber strings it comes with are sticky. And because they are rubber when you play slide notes, the string shortens or tightens just from your finger pulling it, and you get a different note. The electronics are cheap and you can hear crackling when you move the cable with the bass hooked up to an amp.The wooden body feels very cheap as well. I've played expensive ukulele and even though the wood is thin so the notes ring out, it feels solid and sturdy. This thing feels like it was made of a thin sheet of plywood.Other than that though, if you don't mind tuning it every few minutes (by ear or with your own tuner) it has a pretty rich sound. I wanted to switch out the rubber strings for their metal hybrids but like I said I can't access the housing so I'm stuck with the cheapo ones it came with. Honestly I'm surprised because I only hear good things about this company and their instruments, but this is definitely not one of their better models. It feels like a 50 dollar toy/starter guitar you would buy for your kids, not a 350$ instrument you might play in a cafe or in a drum circle.

Input jack was a bit loose. Instrument takes a bit time to get used to rubber strings.Basically it sounds awesome and I find myself playing with it more and more. Easy to carry around. Airport friendly (Though heard stories it depends on the airlines) no one said a word as i did a couple flights with it as hand luggage. All in all it's worth buying

Just love the little bugger. If like myself, you need fingernails to play guitar but have played bass in the past and want to return to it when required, here you can do do it. Plugged in, a double bass sound can be achieved which works well with my spanish guitar. If I was still doing gigs as a base player, I would not hesitate to buy the solid version.

This is a great instrument to practice on anytime. I keep it next to me almost all the time and is easy to just pick up and play anywhere, due to the incredibly small size. Not only that, when you plug it in, IT SOUNDS AMAZING! It has a real nice deep tone, that when I jam with other musicians, they are always amazed that such a small instrument can produce such a rich deep sound. You also can't find a more portable, great sounding bass guitar.

We bought this amazing little instrument for our band Cheshire Moon. We wanted a bass instrument of some sort but neither of us deal with a full scale bass well. My wife is trained on violin and had TMJ problems, so she switched to the mandolin. The idea was some sort of standup bass, but when we saw and, more to the point, heard this, we knew we had found the right instrument. It has a nice deep tone and a bit of standup growl as well. The electronics are quite good. We run it though a PodXt amp emulator. We use the Fender Bassman emulation with 2 12s. Add a touch of EQ, a bit of compression and a smidgen of chorus and it sounds even better. It's probably not for everyone, the strings take a bit of getting used to, they tend to roll under your fingers a bit, but that only took a bit of play. Someone who plays bass guitar would probably find this a little claustrophobic, but if you want an instrument that is portable and really easy to play, this is a great choice. One caveat, it's not terribly loud in an acoustic setting, my bouzouki can drown it out easily, so you will probably want some sort of small amp in most settings. I'd recommend a Pignose bass amp or something like that. We use one of our stage monitors when we're hanging out and playing with friends, it goes direct onstage. If you want a hard case for it, the only thing that seems to fit is their own case. It's on sale from now to Xmas, I got mine for about 80 bucks and it is quite a nice case. All in all, we are very glad we bought this. I expect, if this goes as well over the next couple of years as we hope, that we will upgrade to one of the other models.
