These are blocks of wood. I did not order them to whittle, so I can't give any guidance on whether they are good for that or not. I'm going to use them to make stamps for polymer clay jewelry using a hot glue gun to "draw" on a pattern. I like that the blocks are fairly small - it will make them easy to handle. I will probably cut the larger blocks into smaller pieces.

I guess this is basswood. I don’t really know. But what I do know is that it doesn’t seem to carve as easy as the basswood I have from another source. In my attached picture the piece on the left, with the smaller stop cut, is from this kit. I tried this comparison with three pieces from this kit and three pieces from a different source. This wood isn’t as soft as my other basswood. It still seems usable and I will use it. But I prefer a softer wood.

These wood blocks are good for beginners to wood carving and whittling, I've been using them to practice with. I'm still learning how to properly hold, and what kind of cut each wood carving knife makes - and using these blocks are great for this use. The wood itself is soft, and cuts easily without excessive chipping. The grain in the wood is fairly even, too. The blocks themselves are on the smaller size (but are accurate to the measurements in the listing!!!), so there's not much you can make out of these other than small figurines, etc.

Really nice set of wooden blocks for carving. Good quality wood. Great selection of sizes.

During 2020, I taught myself how to carve in order to create replacement parts for some of my cuckoo clocks, including an heirloom clock that a younger version of myself had pulled off of the wall and broken. Since then, I have been continuing to carve from time to time, and one of the challenges is finding blanks that are large enough to form the basis for pieces I want to create. These blocks served the purpose for several projects, and are of a nice, uniform grain, which makes for precise and controlled carving.

At the time of this review, this box of carving blocks is selling for about ten bucks. I know the seller is still making a sizeable profit at that price for a selection of cutoff pieces, but the blocks are cut square with clean faces and edges. The grain of the basswood is pleasant and these pieces are good for skill development. It's not a bad price for someone else to take the trouble of selecting and preparing the wood pieces.

These will be fun to practice whittling on! I like the sizes and the weight (not too heavy). You should be able to get a finished item relatively quickly, which is nice for beginners.
