I'll probably be using this Kodak slide viewer in conjunction with a light table to sort my large collection of old 35mm slides. I'll use the light table to sort and choose specific slides and then use this viewer to view certain selected slides magnified. This will also be handy to take with me when viewing slides away from my office. This viewer seems well-made and sturdy, it is mostly made of plastic but the plastic seems fairly thick. The 1.8X magnifier appears to be made of glass. The appearance of the slide in the viewer is good and it's easy to look at. The magnifier glass and LED work well together.I found the battery cover is difficult or impossible to open when the slide viewer is in the open position, I had to close the slide viewer to open the cover to remove the batteries. The battery compartment would not allow the use of oversized rechargeable AA batteries, but fit my normal size rechargeable batteries OK, but they were also a pretty tight fit.

Opening the box brought back memories of when Kodak was a household name in film photography.I started taking pictures in 1973 when I was in the Army, so I have a number of 35mm slide pictures that hold a special place for me.This is a well-made solid device. I've had 2 or 3 viewers over the years, and this one has the brightest, most evenly lit, white background that I've seen. The modern white LED's and the frosted plastic panel in front of them help make this possible. But it also looks very white when the light is off, so the manufacturer took care not to introduce any color tones into the light which would affect how the picture is viewed. This is important especially if you intend to scan these to a digital format. Color temperature is always considered when you are making corrections using programs such as Photoshop. It's a little fussy putting the slides in place and you have to be steady. There is only a small, raised frame along the bottom edge of the light panel to keep them in place. And, you have to be careful how you move when you share images - which you will when you see the quality of the picture - so they don't fall out.The built in magnifier is very important when looking at images of this size, basically 1 3/8" x 7/8". There is no magnification of this actual small image without this magnifier. So, the quality of this magnifier is crucial, and I'm happy to say it is clear and doesn't show any distortion I can see. It's 2 3/4" square, which is a good size and, held very steady above the slide at an optimal focal distance for viewing. I like the way it folds up into the screen cover to protect the magnifier and the screen mostly from dust. The device takes four AA batteries. I would recommend the best you can find, maybe Lithium if you can spring for the extra $$. Lithium is best for intensive use and long storage times - I think this describes how my viewer will be used. Once in a while and intensively when I do use it.While we're talking about power, I wish this device had the option for AC power using a small transformer. I know this would increase the cost of the build even if the accessory was optional. But the market for this viewer is limited to people who took slide images before the digital age - they are special to us. I for one would have paid extra for that option. This is a very good, single slide viewer. It's a small item with few parts but the manufacturer has to take great care in the light background, the magnifier and the construction to be successful - nice job Kodak - the true colors come shining through.

My old slide projector just conked out, and I needed to see what I had in all of my slide carousels before starting the large project of digitizing them. This viewer is very easy to use because all you do is place the slide in the viewing area, but I'm not convinced that it's very useful. It's a step above holding the slide up to a light, to be honest. It let me easily identify the subject of a slide, but if I wanted to see any detail (like facial expressions) I had to take a picture of the slide (while in the viewer) with my phone camera so that I could increase the magnification. This had limited use for me, so I was quite disappointed in it.

I have been looking into getting more into analog film and have even picked up a box of slides from an antique store and knew this would be perfect to preview the new images I purchased and for any slide projects I will do in the near future. Now, this is a cool and practical device that does well with what its made for. It takes 4 AA batteries to power up and it is pretty bright, allowing the slides to be viewed very well. The small magnified viewer doesn't provide a lot of magnification but it does seem to clear up the image from the slide a little bit. This works well if you find yourself scanning through your slide images quite a bit or if you work with slide photography as a medium and plan to use this a lot. I found another option to view my slides was to use a light pad (mostly used for tracing images) and it allows me to view my slides and I can place several slides on the light pad at the same time and view many more at once. The slide viewer is great for what it is and I would recommend it for anyone wishing to view their slides.
