From the Manufacturer

Komelon tape measures are inspected throughout the manufacturing process to guarantee accuracy and workmanship. Komelon uses high grade carbon steel that ensures consistent and uniform blade thickness and hardness. The cold rolling process and heat treatment techniques provide durability that resists kinking and bending while using. Komelon steel tapes and springs are de-burred to prevent blade edges from early corrosion and cracking. The new Komelon nylon coating reduces wear and abrasion, featuring a special embossed finish for enhanced protection and reduced glare. The rust-resistant nylon coating covers the entire blade surface ensuring long-lasting readability and durability. Superior sharp and accurate printing for precise reading. Komelon steel tapes provide consistent blade and spring hardness in combination with a de-burred edge treatment. This provides superior operation for the life of the tape. Komelon tapes provide powerful locking to hold the blade securely at any position. Stainless steel end hook and blade protector reduces tape ripping, enlarged holes and resists rust. Built-in shock absorber reduces the impact to the end of the hook when rewinding.

Used all day every day at work; get a few years worth of use before paint wears off. Haven't found a circumference tape that is as nice.

It is so handy to have your tape measure on your fridge or cabinet when you need it, instead of digging through your tool bag. Light product and heavy duty magnet that sticks good. Also great price so naturally we bought multiple for inside the house and the garage!

I bought this a decade ago. And today, the price is 30% lower than it was back then. It's a handy and compact tape measure. Magnetic back means that it I store it on the outside of a filing cabinet and it is always in easy reach. It doesn't lock; you need to press press the side to keep it from retracting. That works a bit better in the right hand than in the left hand. The metal tape measure itself is more sturdy than others I own.

I was looking for a small tape measure for my compact tool pouch to broach the difference between my 6” steel rule and a small laser measuring tool. I was considering a 1/4” tape, but am very happy to have chosen this 1/2”instead. While compact size is important to me, so is utility— if it is annoying or inconvenient to use I don’t want it in my kit. The 1/2 is much less floppy than a 1/4.I’ve had good long term success's with Komelon before and I would say they are just below Stanley and Lufkin in sturdiness but pretty close and typically less expensive. This is my initial impression as I have just started using it..First- perhaps the least important consideration for me- it looks great! Looks like a designer tape not a construction tape, but the feel is that of a solid construction tape. The case is polycarbonate. This is a nearly indestructible plastic, so I expect it will take abuse and last.I am very happy with the feel of the product it is very comfortable in the palm of my hand (I wear XL gloves). The unit feels pretty sturdy and should stand up to at least the abuse of rolling around in a toolbox. The retraction spring is just right -it quickly and smoothly retracts the entire tape. You can easily control the retraction by using your thumb to add friction on the rotating side of the case— something you usually can’t do as easily with a normal construction tape. The “hold” mechanism is your thumb pressing on the rotating side of the case , not the typical piece of plastic pressing on the tape. (This probably won’t work well for lefties). It feels a bit odd because it is different from what I am used to, but it seems to work really well, and I anticipate getting comfortable with it quickly, as it works in a natural way. The lack of a hold button is what allows this tape to be super compact, the case is maybe 1/8” larger in diameter than the coil of tape inside. IMO the design choice here is excellent, particularly for my application. The 1/2” tape extends out to 4 feet easily before buckling which is pretty good in my opinion for a 1/2” blade and not something I was counting on.The measurements are what I consider normal with 1/16 graduations. Top half of tape has feet and inches, bottom has cumulative inches. Every 16” is highlighted in red. Easy to read, even for my 55+ year old eyeballs without reading glasses. The magnet on back is not so strong. It holds the tape just fine on a refrigerator or a tool chest. I would not count on it staying stuck to the outside of a carry around toolbox without falling off. I suppose this is a compromise, as a strong magnet will have every screw, nail, and metal shaving sticking to it and would be difficult to clean off. Again it does work, it doesn’t slide down the fridge under its own weight.I do a lot of industrial piping work and the diameter tape on back is a nice bonus.I think that Komelon hit a home run with this tape! Would I use it on a construction site or my woodshop? Well, no, but it is not designed for that kind of heavy work, you’d be better off with a 3/4 or 1” tape with a lock. As a handy tape on the fridge, in the car, in a sewing kit, toolbox, or just to carry in your pocket it kicks butt!

If you want a compact tape measure you can actually use comfortably, this is the one. No, it is not tiny, if you want the smallest tape, there are better options. Also, it is not 'industrial', if you want a top-line tape for everyday carpenter use, there are better options. What this tape is, in my opinion, is about the best balance between 'compact' and 'usable' as I have found. Compared to the tiny tapes, it is more solid feeling, and has far more standout (a little over 3 feet for mine) and a tip that doesn't keep coming unhooked when you try to measure something. There is no 'lock' in the normal sense. One side of the tape has a disc on it about 2/3 or 4/3 the diameter of the tape itself, that is coupled to the rewind mechanism. Pressure on it (like you are trying to squeeze the sides together) holds the tape in place. With very little practice, it is easy to grab the tape, pull out what you need, and just 'hold' it in place with pressure. It also makes it very easy to control the rewind speed, which I like.Size is 2 1/4 inches in diameter, and 3/4 inch thick. It uses a magnet on the backside, instead of a clip like a standard tape, keeping it more compact, and with nothing to snag if you carry it in a pocket. It is a little bulky to carry in a pocket for everyday running around, for that get a truly compact tape (favorite ultra compact tape is my Komelon 10-ft keychain tape model 4110). For professional use, get a full-sized one (I like the Milwaukee and FastCap 16 or 25 footers). However, for something to carry in the glovebox, it is perfect. Or, if you are doing something where having a usable tape around would be helpful, but want to travel as light as possible, this is a very good choice. The little tiny tapes are nice where space is at a premium, but for just a little more size (mostly in thickness) you can have a tape that offers MUCH easier readability (The lines and numbers on the little 1/4 inch wide compact tape are TINY) along with 3 foot plus standout, this is a great choice.
