I have always found that Kool Stop salmon brake pads stop well in the wet and cause less rim abrasion than stock black pads. As a result, I get plenty of braking power on wet rims riding my old rim brake bike(s) for a fraction of the cost of a new, disc brake equipped bike. I don’t just avoid riding in the rain, because I am a bike commuter (for 30 years) who has to ride every day regardless of the weather.

I upgraded the brakes on my wife's vintage Peugeot bike after she struggled to stop. She really had to squeeze the brakes just to slow down. These, on the other hand, lock up the rear tire with the same squeeze. Much better stopping power than the old black brake bricks. Highly recommended.

I bought used bike for a visit by my granddaughter. These pads noticeably improved the stopping power of the caliper brakes vs. the stock pads.

Be aware that the PICTURE is not the product. This is a Koolstop brake shoe BUT the URBAN designation means it does not fit standard road bike brake shoes. One can remove the brake shoes and bolt these onto the brake arms directly and use them on standard road brakes, at least I hope so, but it looks feasible. Did not think it worth returning for that reason.

Note that in order to get the salmon Continentals you have to select Continentals below Dura-Ace salmon - the possibility on the right. The shape would be as shown in the middle gray Continental selection, not as shown - you must select Continental in the drop down to avoid being shipped the wrong part. These salmon brakes are just right for vintage bikes. Toe-in each pad by carefully bending its aluminum arm - use force but don't overdo. Be gentle or you could break the arm. A 6" crescent works for this. Braking is much better than normal brake pads, also in the rain but not as good in the rain as disk brakes. An alternative for threaded salmon Kool Stop pads would be Kool Stop Eagle Claw 2 - the Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Kool-Stop-Eagle-Bicycle-Cantilever/dp/B001CK0G4W/ref=rtpb_1/146-7670444-1557026 No need to bend the arm to toe-in, unlike the Continentals, Eagle Claw 2 builds toe-in into the fastener.

These are a bit wider than the replacement pads, so not an ideal fit for superbe (or knock off like I have) pads, but I made them work. I think I could shave the rubber down and make it work, but it wasn't that big of a deal to me. The great news is these aren't so long they interfere with my frame. Can't judge performance yet, but they certainly work better than the dry rotted pads they replaced.I attached a photo of what the salmon continental actually are - as expected they are the full threaded/mounted pad, and not just the insert (which was what I saw when I ordered).

These pads were ordered after replacing the steel wheels on an old 3 speed with alloy wheels. The black pads that came with thebike weren't terribly worn or hardened, but Kool Stop claim to be more gentle to softer alloy rims than cheaper pads. They DEFINITELY work much better. I had been contemplating replacing the cheapo Weinman calipers, cables, etc, as to get betterbraking, but the Kool Stop Salmon have eliminated this notion. Possibly the most expensive brake pads available, but saving the old calipers and cable housings outweighs this, and being kinder to my new rims is an added payoff.
