its a couple of pieces of light weight wood. I thought about making one of these when I needed one, but they take time to cut and get right. This is HUGE. It drops a circle of 1 YARD. Its like the size of my arm up to my elbow. Having one is good for wood workers. The suction cup on the end of the pivot is meh. Im pretty sure I can pull it apart and sharpen it into a tip If I need to. The pen holder is weird too. It swings out and you clamp a pen or pencil or Permanent marker in. Im used to the drawing tool coming straight down off the arm. I have a router jig I built to cut perfect circles with no need to draw anything out. Having a extra large compass can help, since you can draw more complex patterns out of a perfect circle, or if I need to cut a circle into dry wall, I can use it to make a paper template. Its wood so it goes with the delicate equipment and needs to be kept away from water. Im not even going to bother applying a wood finish to prevent it warping, Im with the factory on this one. Just keep it away from water. The nut that holds the 2 swing arms together cinches tight and the wood doesnt flex. So YES you can use the big compass to draw a professional circle. I read some other compass reviews where they indicated this needed addressing.
