If you are looking to tool up a mini-lathe and want to "sample" holders then this is really a pretty awesome deal. These seem like standard "generic quality" low-end lathe tools, which is less of an insult than it seems. The only criticism I have is that each tool only comes with a pair of inserts in spite of the picture implying three per tool.

I have only had this lathe tool set for a day, but it has been working well so far on my old Clausing metal lathe. The set includes a good variety of tools with seven turning holders and fourteen golden carbide inserts, which makes it perfect for cutting and threading tasks. The tools feel sturdy, and the inserts fit securely without any issues. They cut cleanly and seem durable, though I have not had time to test them extensively. The five eighths inch size fits my lathe perfectly, and everything was well organized in the package. For the price, this set is a great value. It is a practical choice for anyone looking for a comprehensive set of lathe tools. I am looking forward to using it more, but so far, it has been a good fit for my needs.

As a beginner, I constantly need to build up my tools. So far HSS have been my to-go option but I wanted to start playing with carbide. I consider this to be the perfect set to get you started. It comes with a decent amount of tools, and they are of top quality for hobbyists. They have good weight, and rigidity. The machined pockets are snug and the oxide finish is very nice. Inserts cut smooth and clean, and I got no chatter on a PM-1022v. It doesn't come with a lot of inserts, but you can always get more. Fits AXA QCTP, as long as you have XL 5/8"Honestly, for $60 you really can't beat this deal.

I got this for lathe metalworking. This is a very robust, heavy duty set. It includes two boring bars and five tool holders. Also included are fourteen titanium nitride-plated carbide cutters for cut-off work, threading, and general lathe cutting. An extra bonus are six T-15 wrenches and one hex key. The finish on the hex keys and carbide inserts is impeccable. The finish on the tool holders is very good but not A+. However, this slight roughness to the finish is in places that will not affect the quality of the tool cut. Considering the modest amount of lathe work I do, this set is going to last me a very long time. Recommended.

While these are not top quality lathe tools, they are perfect upgrades for any home hobby machine tools. I’ve been using low cost brazed tooling for my Smithy machine but the quality of cuts and finish always seems to be lacking. I have a few insert tools but those too are limited to specific tasks. This set of insert tool holders covers a wide range of tasks and the inserts appear to do a fantastic job of removing metal and clearing away the chips in small fragments rather than leaving long annoying curls that get wrapped up in everything. These 5/8 inch holders are a bit big for my machine but they mount rigidly in my AXA QCTP and don’t vibrate or chatter in the least bit. Well worth the investment for my needs.

The quality is impressive enough to get me out of my warm home and into my unheated garage to work on my project, that’s how I feel about this set Comes with everything shown in the second picture. The 5/8" shank is rigid like a rock, and the carbide insert cuts through steel effortlessly compared to my economy set.

These tools are nicely made. The insert pockets ate cleanly machined, nicely de-burred and the inserts seat very tightly. The black oxide finish is outstanding. However, the packing/shipping department has some severe issues. With the first set sent to me, the order was missing two of the turning toolholders. I returned that set and the replacement set arrived today. It had the two pieces that were missing in the first shipment but the replacement set is missing the parting tool holder. 2 out of 2 missing parts of the set.

First a caveat- I am not an experienced machinist. But I do find myself every so often needing to turn something on the lathe. Sometimes that is in stainless, which led me to consider insert tooling over my initial hand ground HSS tools. This is, to me, an impressive set of tools for the price. Granted, there are only a couple of inserts of each type included (OK by me, an occasional user), but inserts are a commodity. This 5/8" set is about the largest and therefore strongest tooling size that is useable on my small lathe. I see that similar sets are available for a few $ less in a smaller size, 10 or 12mm. In my limited experience rigidity in tooling means a lot, so I'm willing to spring a bit more for the thickest tools my lathe can use.Honestly, this set exceeded my expectations and is more than adequate for my level of use.
