Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. It contains at least 11% chromium and may contain elements such as carbon, other nonmetals and metals to obtain other desired properties. Stainless steel's resistance to corrosion results from the chromium, which forms a passive film that can protect the material and self-heal in the presence of oxygen.
7x7 aircraft cable is made from 7 strands that each contain 7 wires, for a total of 49 wires. A 7x19 aircraft cable is made from 7 strands that each include 19 wires, for a total of 133 wires. This means a 7x19 construction consists of over 2.5 times the total number of wires as a 7x7.
Different wire counts, and the corresponding wire sizes, also provide different flexibility characteristics within the same finished cable diameter. 7x7 and 7x19 cables are both flexible. Their higher wire counts allow them to bend more easily, which also makes them a more effective choice for pulley systems than strand.
