Ideal for applications where a contact tachometer would be unsafe to use or will not reach. Just apply some of the supplied reflective material to the moving part and point the laser tachometer at it. The tachometer measures how often the reflective tape passes at a given time and calculates the rpm. Does not work that great, I purchased to gauge the speed on my Hit and Miss engines, Cleaned the flywheel then put a strip across it and tried to get it to read, got it to read once. The stirp is about 1 to 1.5 inches long and goes completely across the face of the flywheel, But cannot get it to read. Then I also put a piece on the 1 1/4 inch crank and tried to get it to read off of that, Still would not read, Tried holding it about 2 inches away from the surface, of both pieces but still nothing. Tried holding it about a foot away still would not read. Then tried on a second engine still could not get it to read. Needed the min and max as these are designed not to run more than 450 rpm and should not slow below a certain rpm before firing again. Do not waist your money on them. Might be good for a laser pointer.
