One of my nephews was a missionary in Germany. After serving for 2 years, he came home and was a total Germanophile. So, when I saw these authentic German style shoes, I grabbed them up for him, as they can be quite expensive to import. He LOVES them. He did mention that yes, they look authentic and were exactly what he would expect. However, he wished there were a couple more holes available to properly tighten the shoe buy use of the laces. So, in that regard, he may only wear them occassionally - not an everyday all day kind of shoe for him.

I was having trouble finding at least a decent shoe size but these are amazing! They did run just a wee bit big but it’s only because you can’t tighten them despite having laces, but maybe there’s a way to get around that.

I ordered these Arshman Bavarian shoes because they’re really unique and I’ve always liked masculine footwear. And they aren’t just great for Oktoberfest—they work well with other costumes as well as everyday clothes.Since they’re sized for men, I had to adjust the size for women’s, and they fit comfortably, though a bit snug. That’s not a bad thing, but keep it in mind if you’re planning to wear thick socks. I typically wear a women’s 9.5 and I went with men’s 8. I believe the leather will relax a bit over time, so this was the right size choice for me.The leather is top-notch. I love the color gradation—it gives the shoes a rich, well-worn look. The rubber soles are practical, with solid grip even on wet surfaces. These are slip on shoes, but the side lace detail is really cool. One thing to note is that these need regular care to keep the leather in good condition. I’d recommend treating them at least twice a year.I wear these with tights and skirts mostly—Oktoberfest is once a year, after all! They are quirky, comfortable and quite the conversation piece.

NOTE: the seller did not indicate which size scale was used for these. It is US sized. Normally, this would not be an issue with shoes sold on the US website, but these being "authentic" German Trachten shoes, I frequently find Trachten items sold in EU sizes and have to convert.SIZING: I found the shoes may run about a 1/2-size large. I usually buy 9-1/2 (US) for a snug fit and 10 for a comfort fit. I got the size 10 for this shoe, as they have no 1/2 sizes, and I found they are a bit loose in the length. The width is spot on. Note that I am also wearing authentic Trachten wool socks with these, which are much thicker than cotton tube socks most Americans wear daily. With laced shoes, I can sometimes tie them tighter to make up for a size difference, but you won't be able to with these. Personally, I would rather have a looser fit in these than a tighter fit though. I included one photo where my feet are pushed fully into the shoe, and you can see the gap of the back.COMFORT: I found the shape of these to be a little odd-- since mine were slightly oversized, I couldn't get a feel for any grip in the instep. I actually had to check the bottoms of the shoe to make sure I hadn't put the first one on backwards. Once they were laced up, the fit improved substantially, even though Haferl shoes don't have much lacing. The bottoms are knobby boot soles, as shown in the picture. There isn't much give to the shoe, so they do need to be broken in a bit. The insole has a bot of cushion, but no noticeable instep support-- fairly typical of a boot. Given that mine run a little loose on me, I am going to add a comfort insole insert into these and see if that gives a firmer fit and extra support at the instep.COLOR: I got the brown ones, as my Lederhosen are a deep brown. I found these to be a bit lighter and not quite as rich of a brown color as is shown in the product photos. I have brown leather dye that I may use on these to get them to a more rich, deeper brown. Please see my photos for reference.SMELL: This is BY FAR the main issue I have with these shoes. They reek of vulcanized rubber (although the leather dye might contribute here as well). They are sealed in a plastic zip-top bag, which just contributes to the problem here.I had to put them outside to (hopefully) off-gas. I see that another customer's only complaint was also the smell, and I am in total agreement. They smell like a tire factory-- not just a new tire, but the whole factory. That being said, I will give these shoes some time to see if they off-gas, and I'll update my review with my experience. **UPDATED COMMENTS AT BEGINNING OF REVIEW**COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: There are no markings on the shoes that I could find that indicate their country of origin.Overall, based on initial experience, I've rated these as 3 stars. If they off-gas and I can get a better fit with an insole insert, then I may rate these 4 stars.

Ok - so these shoes fit, and they seem moderately comfortable. However the smell coming off of the shoes is profoundly strong, a chemical smell as if the shoes are made of ONLY toxic materials. I set them outside to air out and a day later the smell has not reduced. I would steer clear of these shoes, unless you have no shoes at all, they are free, and you love shoes that smell like they have been dipped into poisons.

i wanted to give a try to these since the design was unique. fairly comfortable and looks very hip. used it mostly on weekends and i can say they are comfortable enough if you dont walk too much. runs just a tad bigger than the size indicates. you’ll love it if you are into different styles.
