Rubber coated. But latex fetishists will be disappointed that there is not a strong smell of rubber. The finger grips are nice also.

I implore anyone thinking about buying these weight plates to consider alternatives. I was excited about getting these weight plates because they were encased in rubber; however, as others have mentioned in their reviews, the smell is intolerable. I am convinced that there is toxic material in the rubber because I have experienced headaches and irritation in the back of my throat from breathing these fumes. They emit a strong cigarette smell that is intolerable, but more importantly, unhealthy. I set up a home gym in one of my bedrooms, and each day, for a week, I opened the window and ran the fan to air the room out. That did not improve the strong odor. STAY AWAY from these weight plates. As I am writing this review, I have a both a headache and irritation in my throat.

These are HORRIBLE!!!! The weights and the packaging smelled so bad I had to keep all outside. 2 days later and a washing with simple green DIDN’T help. Smell like smoke(fire) and a million cigarettes!!! Maybe they were manufactured in a cigarette factory that caught on fire. AWFUL!!

Solid plates for a good price, but they reek of cigarettes. I don’t know if new plates are supposed to smell like this but it’s really strong. Even wiping them down with clorox wipes still don’t get rid of the smell.

Arrived earlier than anticipated, liked the fast shipping especially with covid out there. Gave it a 4 star because nothing is perfect. it slides off the bar a bit more than others but no big deal. seems solid, will probably order some matching 45s soon.

Nothing available locally to me similar to this. For the price, they are great. The metal collars slide well on my barbell. The extra holes on the 5lb plate make it easy to grab or hold when using them for stretches also.
