Everyone knows if you have the original on your drum. They’re not very good. This is the upgrade to the original. It has stepped tightening so it doesn’t work loose when playing the drum. I feel confident telling you to purchase this and upgrade your snare drum.

I've been gigging with this on a Supraphonic for the last year. Mostly got the job done! I won't take any stars off for the holes not fitting the shell - unfortunately that's the nature of old Supras. The knob was pretty difficult to spin with the snares engaged, so adjusting on the fly was annoying. The placement is a little awkward to wrap my fingers around. But most importantly this strainer has so many moving parts, and some made of plastic. It's a pretty complicated system! The drum took a pretty light fall (my bad!) and all seemed well until I realized the tension knob wouldn't turn. Upon further inspection, the black plastic piece had cracked very slightly which made the whole thing stop working. Some of the blame falls on me, but in searching for a replacement, I realized I wanted something with fewer moving parts and no plastic. The P88 just has so many things that can go wrong. And since I gig and travel with my drum often, it isn't the most reliable piece. The P86c was my answer. Simpler and better looking. Hope it lasts a long time!

Much better than the original throw on my Supraphonic and a straight swap (just had to slightly file/enlargen the fitting holes on my snare but only a fraction).Keeps the tension better than the original, which tended to loosen slightly whilst playing.

The throw is a fantastic upgrade over a P85. Zero complaints, looks the part and functionally massive update. The butt is another story. It isn’t drilled to fit as a replacement for the p32 butt plate. More specifically, it isn’t tapped for screw threads, even though there is a hole in exactly the right spot hidden under the rubber grommet thing. Seems like maybe the spacing on older drums wasn’t consistent enough or something where they didn’t want to sell this as a guaranteed match? I don’t know, but at any rate be sure you know the spacing on what you’re upgrading from, and if it’s the p32 like on an old acrolite, you’re either throwing the new butt plate in the trash and having a weird stylistic mismatch, or you’re gonna have to buy a drill tap and add the threading yourself. It’s not super difficult but it’s also not real easy if you’ve never done it.I’ve upgraded two acrolites with this kit, mine and a friend’s. I ruined my butt plate and the second one is only sorta ok, didn’t end up holding rock solid but my buddy thought it was good enough. It seems to be holding fine so far. For mine, I just bought an Inde Universal butt plate and I can’t recommend it enough - vastly better design, can adapt to a wide range of hole spacing, looks and functions great.Long story short - I really like this strainer, but be prepared to buy a different butt plate or keep your old one on unless you’re sure that you actually have a match on the spacing. Ludwig should really consider a redesign on this as it makes this kit partially useless for a whole lot of their drums that people might want to upgrade.

I have two vintage Supraphonics that are my primary work-horses. They are vintage, but not in perfect condition, and the original snare mechanisms are not optimal. Retrofitting both snares with this unit was a massive upgrade, super easy to install and so much more functional than the original. If these snares were in mint condition, I might not retrofit them, but these are "daily driver" snare drums, not showroom pieces. I need them to WORK. They are way more reliable now. Highly recommend.

This is the second one I've purchased. The first one went on an early 80s Supraphonic which had a P85 strainer in poor condition. The second one went on a late 70s Acrolite which had a 12 hole P85 strainer. I don't always use wires that use snare cables, and I like to be able to use whatever option I want on most of my snares. These are just a modern take of the Ludwig classic design. They seem to be way more robust to me, and I like the throw off feel. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are swapping for an older drum, the butt plate will not fit without drilling additional holes in the shell. In my case the original butt plates were still in good shape and worked for my application.I feel like these are a pretty good value considering the cost of many other strainers out there for beaded snare drums. If I get any other older Ludwigs I will probably consider swapping out for one of these if they have an older P85.

I’ve tolerated the P85 throw-off on my 5x14 chrome-over-brass Supraphonic for a long time, but it’s always stuck when trying to engage and disengage snares mid-performance. This throw-off is smooth as butter. Effortless motion, and the stepped tension adjustment is very precise. Not only that, but the snare response on my drum is now vastly improved. So much more sensitivity, warmth, and body from the snares than before. I’m still using the stock Ludwig snares and bottom head, with a Fiberskyn Diplomat on the batter. Incredible sound and feel. No problems installing the included butt plate on my drum, either. No discernible performance improvements there, but I like the look of it better. It’s a shame that Ludwig doesn’t make this the default throw-off for all of their snare drums, but this upgrade is absolutely essential. It’s like having a whole new drum. A must!

Let’s face it! Ludwig snares and snare strainers are industry standards, but as good as they were / are, as a nod to the past, the P88AC takes a new spin on an old design, and gives you a much more reliable version to do the job!If you have that one snare drum that is amazing! Sounds incredible, but the snare tension keeps loosening while you play, (P-83 strainers are notorious for this), a new P-88AC will give you a new lease on life!!!A great snare strainer… use it wisely!!!

I picked up a classic (meaning pretty old and gently beat up) Ludwig Supraphonic. Typical of the standard P-85 throw-offs that come with them, it didn't work. Not wanting to replace it with another P-85, I found this gem. Solidly built, stylishly designed - this gave new life to a workhorse snare drum. The mounting holes fit perfectly and installation was a breeze. Side note, the butt plate holes do not match the standard holes on the Supra. Drill holes if you want, but I wasn't going there. This throw-off works beautifully, looks fabulous, and while it hasn't improved my drumming at all, I know my snare will perform as it should. Thanks P-88 throw-off, keep up the good work.
