This is a great product! It is the same as on my original Ludwig Rock/Concert 403 from late 70s/early 80s with the screw on top.If this is for a replacement, then you need to ensure that your Ludwign snare has the tone control with the screw on top/knob at the bottom. Else this will not work. Obviously this does not apply to a recent no-tone control snare as you will need to position and drill the holes.I have found that the felt pad is a bit shallower than the original.Action is ultra smooth and this is very much a professional quality product.I fitted the tone control to a very recent Ludwig Supralite because....Note: to my horror (first drum shell I have purchased in 40 years) I discovered that for some insane tonal reason (actually my vote would be more for cost saving reason) they do not fit tone control to drums anymore. Oh! but there is Gel, and there are numerous heads with built in overtone deadener.... Yes this is true but that is a one setting. You have to live with, It is not adjustable to where you play so this certainly will not work for me.As for external clamp on hoop Rogers style tone control....they were and still are in the way of your playing on your snare! so again not good for me.So I fitted it....copied the hole location from a Ludwig LM411 super sensitive which is also the same depth (6.5) as on my Supralite.honestly, I wish hardware manufacturer would supply a small paper or plastic jig/hole locator (with even some waiver like: do not try at home if you have no idea). This would help "not afraid to do it myself and assume the risks and consequences" people like me....Anyway....fitted and It is wonderful! Would buy again if I needed one.Not cheap but certainly looks (great chrome knob) and operates far better that any after market tone control I have seen. The shipping was fast and I received the part 2 days before the due date...so very happy. The original packaging (header) looked tired so this is stock that has been hanging around for a while. It does not bother me since the part looks fine and this was cheaper than other vendors on the net.Ludwig should pre-cut the holes with blanking plugs so that drummers have the option to fit this tone control....

These were used to replace missing controls on a 1974 set. I had to open 1 hole in the drum for the adjustment screw but otherwise fit great.

this will not work on all brand vintage drums.all the big drum companies had their own version.this is fantastic almost the saime demension and all.only difference is the nylon washers instead of steel on origional.anyone who collects ,buys ,trades ludwig drums im shure has gotten one or more with the muffler missing this is the saime fit and saime model.if you8 go to ebay they all want a small fortune this is the smart choice.

I was so pleased to get this part for my new snare drum. Drum mufflers have not been used in the manufacture of drums for some time now and the only way you can compensate for overtones now a days is to apply tape or sticky jels to drum skin surface. I did an online search and a music store in Bentonville Arkansas had just what I was looking for. The original Ludwig drum muffle. I am very pleased with my purchase thanks to the folks at Arkansas Musicworks.

Top Snaredämpfer, der meine billige Picolo super zur Retro aufgewertet hat. Verstehe eh nicht, warum diese Innendämpfer irgendwann verschwunden sind!

I got this for my '90s Ludwig LM402 Supraphonic snare. Installation was initially simple; One screw above the adjustment knob, install the adjustment knob assembly below in the second hole and it should be good to go. So, no problems there. The issue i had with it was that when the mute is in the "off" (unscrewed) position the spring has insufficient tension to keep the adjustment knob from rattling loosely in the drum shell. The solution to this is to remove the adjustment knob and bend the spring downward in the drum to increase the tension, then reinstall the knob assembly. Problem solved. The thing that bothers me a bit is having to apply force to a new part in order to adjust it, with the possibility of damaging it in the process. Spring steel has a tendency to snap when overstressed, so you do have to be careful how far you bend it in order to get the desired result. Luckily it went well and the mute now has some spring tension on it when it's not applied to the drum head.Thinking on it now, this might be because metal shells are so thin. If this were mounted on a thicker wooden shell, the spring adjustment might not be necessary.Another minor gripe i have is that the muting disc doesn't come up under the head evenly. It hits at an angle, so one edge of it contacts the head first. The older models didn't have this problem (i have 2 other snares with the older version of the mute on them). I could have bent the spring again to fix this, but i didn't consider it to be worth the risk of snapping the spring.Another thing i would make note of is that this mute has the mounting screw above the knob. Some pics of it here show the screw below it. Older Ludwig snares and drums used a mounting screw below the knob. At some point Ludwig switched the location of the screw. I'm not sure if this will work easily with the old model snares and drums, so be aware that you might have to adapt your older Ludwig drum for this newer model mute to fit.Overall, i'd say this is a good buy. It came in a couple of days and with free shipping from Prime, the price is competitive with other sellers. Had it not been for the spring and tilt issue, i'd have given it 5 stars...but again those things might not be an issue on snares and drums with thicker shells.

This is the internal "muffler" Ludwig has used for decades. It installed easily and works well, allowing the user to "dial in" more or less dampenng of drum overrtone as desired.

A time honored design- so why did they decide to switch the mounting screw to the top of the bracket instead of where it was? So that you have to buy the "real" thing on ebay for $39-$59? I love Ludwig drums, and I know their quality and manufacturing aren't what they were before the Monroe move. The "new" P85 strainer for example, is not as good as the 70's model and it's not a good replacement for vintage snare drums. Neither is this muffler, which works as well as the original- but any Ludwig fan will know it's not the original at a glance- plus the knob used to be slightly higher on the shell when mounted and will not be exactly where your old one was on an older snare. But it's 2014 and you save money when you can- and it works just like the original and does a great job.
