Your cart is empty. This original waved mortar was designed by the Japanese pottery company Yamagata Touen, which has a rich history dating back to 1794. The seventh-generation potter, Tomoya Kato, invented this special functional mortar after nine years of trial and error. This waved design keeps ingredients at the bottom, preventing them from moving up around the mortar, thus making grinding easier and faster. Food can be ground with greater freshness due to less heat from rubbing. Please note that color, shape, and size may vary slightly for each handmade item. Made in Japan.

This is a well-made traditional suribachi in a convenient smaller size. This mortar and pestle are sturdy and well-made. I'm so glad to be able to find this for making single bowls of miso soup from paste.Minutes one star (really only a half) because product arrived with white ring of dust from the foot of the bowl that was probably stacked inside it at some point. It took some effort to remove this clay dust from the ridges inside the suribachi, but it eventually all could be rinsed out.

The mortar grooves easily break when grinding herbs.. nothing like having pieces of ceramic in my mint and basil grounds. Anyone want basil-mint w/ a hint of ceramic seasoning in their food? It's a great giftable item for people who're into adding this to their Japanese decor (I love Japanese decor) but it's not for actual use.

I needed a mortar and pestle that would crush garlic and ginger with ease and I didn’t want something heavy so I decided on this Japan style and the story of the wavy grooves keeping the spices at the bottom was why I chose this particular one. It is easy to even hold the bowl in one hand and I found it quite easy to just gently pound and rub this way, that way, and the other way to quickly make a paste of the garlic and ginger. I am really pleased I treated myself and after I have used it I have simply rinsed it. Also apparently dishwasher safe so I will probably do that too but of course I won’t put the wooden pestle in the dishwasher.

Looks pretty and it works better than a mortar pestle to make paste out of garlic or grind up ginger etc. Lovey on the shelf.
