What a rip off! I would have never bought this if I had known the retainer nut was not included. It is sold separately for over $13.00 !The retainer nut is not a regular nut you can buy at your local hardware store. It is a specialty item made specifically for this backing pad. I can buy a backing pad AND the nut for less than $13.00 and that's exactly what I did. Black & Decker and Bosch are some good alternatives to Makita and the retainer nut IS included! Avoid this one and shop around!

The combination of this pad and the Makita nut is not a good one. The nut sticks up too high and can scar the work if the angle is not flat enough. On other sanders, the nut tightens up and pulls the sandpaper disk down into a depression on the pad. Either the pad or the nut need work. Or both.

It is a sanding pad that I use on my Makita sander/polisher. It hasn't distorted yet, even with the abuse I have put it through in the last 2 years. I know it will eventually deteriorate from heat when working metal, but is inexpensive and indispensable.
