About this item

  • Secures to the mane in only 3 seconds and is highly visible to first responder (law enforcement, evacuation personnel, neighbor)
  • Stainless steel compression spring inside exerts 40 pounds of pressure on the hair. To make a secure attachment, ManeStay relies on flexible UNbraided hair that can be drawn fully into the ManeStay body. When properly attached, ManeStay's hook has drawn the hair inside and fully retracted the compression spring, creating a U-bend in the hair.
  • Stainless steel connector ring adds strength and durability to the product
  • Your emergency contact details are permanent and waterproof when written using a Sharpie brand marker
  • For ManeStay's heat/flame resistance properties, view the graphic in Images and/or scroll down the page to view the full Product Description
  • ManeStay is securely suspended from the mane as opposed to being pressed against the hide. Easy ManeStay attachment instructions can be found in the Product Description (scroll down the page to view more photos and info)

Product Description

ManeStay offers peace of mind to horse owners. Get your cell phone to ring when your horse has been found.

A look at the front and back of ManeStay

Give your horse the ManeStay advantage in emergency situations.

Weighing just 1.7 ounces, ManeStay is a powerful tool to help get your horse back in emergency situations such as natural disasters. The horse's owner indicates the presence of a microchip, saving time for a first responder/volunteer scanning for a potentially non-existent chip.

Brightly colored and placed high on the horse's body, ManeStay has become the gold standard of ID tags and offers peace of mind to horse owners when faced with a true emergency.

ManeStay is not designed for everyday use. It should be kept with your emergency supplies so it's readily accessible when needed.

If you're wanting an ID tag that can be left in place for your season of natural disasters, please consider our I.C.E. UltraLite instead. It hooks through a mane braid, weighs less than three-quarters of an ounce, and will stay put long term. Just be diligent about checking the braid and elastics regularly. Re-braiding once a week is a good idea. Replacing the elastics before they become worn or weak is mandatory for a secure attachment. I.C.E. UltraLite is also available here on Amazon.

ManeStay secures in only 3 seconds to a horse's mane or tail.

Highly visible identification is key to getting your horse back when faced with wildfire, hurricane or other natural disaster.

Inspired by personal experience with wildfires and horses, ManeStay was created to provide highly visible ID to first responders. In a field of evacuated horses, those with visible ID will be first to be processed and returned to their families. Give your horse the ManeStay advantage while giving yourself peace of mind.

Is your horse microchipped?

By circling Yes or No on the outside of the I.C.E. form, the horse owner indicates whether the horse has been microchipped.

This saves precious time spent scanning for a potentially non-existent chip, speeding up the process of returning the horse to his family.

Inside view of ManeStay's contact form

Your emergency contact information is permanent and waterproof.

We've found that the best permanent marker is one made by Sharpie so we highly recommend using their ultra fine point marker. This will ensure your emergency contact details are permanent and waterproof.

It's always a good idea to include an out-of-area phone number, too, as a secondary contact in case phone service has been compromised in your area.

Keep your ManeStay easily accessible and show others how to use it.

Put your ManeStay in an unlocked cabinet or in your go bag of emergency gear so that it's readily accessible when you need it.

If you're not available to secure the ManeStay when it's needed, it's a good idea to show others how to use it and to be comfortable with the steps to attach it correctly.

ManeStay Specs

High quality components, including a powerful compression spring

ManeStay's hook puts a whopping 40 pounds of pressure onto the hair, thanks to the stainless steel compression spring inside.

We use a stainless steel attachment ring as well to add to ManeStay's strength and durability.

ManeStay weighs 1.7 oz. It measures 9" long and 1.5" at its widest.

Its body is injection-molded polycarbonate, which is the same material used for NFL helmets.

Flexible UNbraided hair only!

To be securely attached, the hair needs to be drawn into the ManeStay body, FULLY retracting the hook onto the hair. For this reason ManeStay should never be attached to braided hair.

Closeup of ManeStay's hook

ManeStay's hook

Tiny teeth inside ManeStay's hook are there to add some friction to the connection between the ManeStay and the mane.

ManeStay attaches to a small section of mane hair

A small section of hair is all that's needed

Take a section of mane hair that's 10" from the horse's ears. Press the plunger, placing the ManeStay hook onto the hair about 1 inch down from the crest of the neck. Releasing the plunger will close the hook onto the hair.

Correctly positioned ManeStay

Correctly positioned ManeStay

Here's a properly positioned ManeStay, about 10" behind the ears and about 1" below the crest of Rio's neck. This keeps the ManeStay high on the body, yet far enough from his ears to keep the ManeStay from bumping them when his head is down.

ManeStay's heat and flame information

Will ManeStay melt, injuring my horse?

No, and here's why:

When mane/tail hair is exposed to 370º or higher temperatures, the hair will disintegrate. Mane/tail hair at those temps becomes a fuel.

All of ManeStay's components have considerably higher melting points, so ManeStay will drop off the hair well before any of its components would begin to distort.

At temps up to 370º ManeStay is still providing safe, secure identification. If the animal is exposed to 300º temperatures, he is unfortunately already in grave danger with burns and/or smoke inhalation.

I placed this on my Belgians tail for about a week (last minute decision). I had to board him in a pasture last minute and was worried he was going to break through the fencing. . I checked on it everyday. It held up through storms… rain… him running around. The info inside never faded.I highly recommend this product if you have an emergency. I didn’t want anything that braided in or around their hock. This was bright, durable and if you follow instructions… stays on pretty darn good.
