About this item

  • HAND HAMMERED IN TURKEY: formed by artisans to refine thickness, shape, tone, and feel—each Byzance cymbal is truly one of a kind
  • B20 BRONZE ALLOY: composed of 80% copper and 20% tin, this alloy produces a rich, complex sound with a wide dynamic range—perfect for nuanced playing
  • MATT GARSTKA SIGNATURE: Matt Garstka (Animals As Leaders) needed a china with a quintessential “chaw”, trashiness, a bit of dryness and a controlled cut; with this china, all of these pillars of sound come together in equilibrium
  • SANDBLASTED SURFACE: tones down harsh frequencies and stick attack to give the cymbal a unique soft, mellow touch and pre-aged sound; this finish will age beautifully with a unique patina (NOT recommended to use cymbal cleaner or polish)
  • TEXTURE GALORE: hole cut-outs, sandblasting, and lathing create a smooth feel with crisp definition and dry, earthy tones; a traditional center finish preserves some of the highs
  • SENSITIVE TO YOUR TOUCH: Byzance Vintage cymbals come to life in any mix with a reactive touch that adapts to all dynamic levels
  • SIZE AND TYPE: 20" china
  • MODERN MEETS TRADITION: hand hammered with old-world techniques, designed for today’s demands

Crafted to mimic the sound of an aged cymbal, the Vintage voice within Byzance has unique features that simulate the aging process of a cymbal to couple relic sounds with modern appeal. The Vintage line was born from the Sand Ride, a flagship cymbal developed with Meinl Cymbals artist, Benny Greb. Byzance Vintage now includes a wide array of cymbals that have helped to define the Meinl sound. Sand models feature narrow blade lathing and a sandblasted finish, whereas Vintage Pure models are unlathed and raw. These cymbals are made in Turkey from cast B20 bronze and hand hammered into shape by skilled Turkish cymbal smiths.

I've had a couple chinas in the past without really enjoying them. This is the only china that truly sounds musical to me. 10/10

My first china ever was a Zildjian 18" Oriental China Trash c2000. 22 years later a lot had changed in cymbal technology. I used to tape the underside of the Zildjian to shorten the decay. This beautiful China has addressed that decay issue. And, obviously, our patron saint of drums has worked with meinl to develop this.

Bright, cuts, sustains. I would say, if you want the sound of something like a 30% this crash, 70% china, this is the sound.

This china cymbal has that classic sound that we all know and look for. Has relatively short sustain but enough to really sound good in a mix, whether you're on stage or recording an album. While it's an expensive cymbal, you will not be disappointed with this product. Matt Garstka hit a home run when he helped develop this cymbal. Works for many different genres. If you have the money, grab one!
