One of the key innovations of the original MNRead card are the well-designed continuous text paragraphs, which provide fantastic clinical simulations of the typical reading task. This approach helps ensure that clinician-selected magnification devices are appropriate for patient’s everyday reading goals. Our new MNRead Pocket card builds upon the innovations of the original card by including a selection of high–yield elements on reverse surface of card that are transferrable to real–world use of low vision devices for common visual goals.
The MNRead Pocket Card is the perfect demonstration tool to confirm selected low vision device magnification levels for individuals of all ages with low vision. The matte surface of the card has paragraphs from the original MNRead Charts in a clinically-relevant size range. Specifically, the card contains three octaves of print sizes from 3.2M extra-large print to 0.4M fine-print, which is a standard near visual acuity range of 20/160 down to 20/20 (0.9 to 0.0 LogMAR). This size range was optimized for assessment of reading performance in era of anti-VEGF treatment, where many low vision patients are correctable to 20/100 or better.
The glossy surface of the card displays a potpourri of full-color objects one would encounter in daily life. Some examples of our carefully calibrated real-world facsimiles include:
- crisp newspaper columns
- faded newspaper text (50% Weber contrast)
- recipes with fractions
- nutritional information
- prescriptions
- OTC med instruction labels
- grocery price tags
- text message boxes
- complex musical scores
- rulers, computer keys
- remote control buttons
- fishing hooks/sewing needles

Back of the chart with various print text and images are a sticker. I’ve had it for 2 months already and it is already giving out on me by peeling off from its corners.

I was disappointed that near point card was just a printed sticker put on a plastic card. Other cards I have gotten have the printing right on the plastic. This will be hard to keep clean, especially on the matte side.

Good white color with dark text for the Snellen/LogMAR/M sentence side. Other side with real world examples is nice but uses a glossy sticker and the glare can be a nuisance occasionally. Good way to check glare off glossy paper in the real world though.

I’m an eye doctor and got one for each exam room. Very thick sturdy durable plastic. The side with images is a sticker placed on the card, but so far it’s very high quality as well. Thick finish. Very strong attachment on edges. These should last me a while. I’m happy.
