I don't hate this knife. Let me state that up front. I bought this for kitchen use (and possibly for camping, travel, etc.) and was eager to see how it performed at home. First of all, it is very slim and is perfect for creating paper-thin tomato slices, or thin anything else. And it came scary sharp. The sheath is safe and easy to use. Having reported that, I confess that my joy was ended when I had to use it again, i.e., a second time. Perhaps it's a rule that if the knife maker says it's "stainless steel" and gives no other information about its manufacture, then you can figure that it's not a premium steel, possibly soft, and is likely to need very frequent sharpening. The product description does declare that the "MSR alpine kitchen knife is made from 440-series stainless steel." I'm not a steel snob, and it's a fact that many good knives are made out of 440A, 440B, and 440C (the 440-series). But if the steel is not heat-treated properly during manufacture, it's beneficial properties--especially the ability to hold a sharp edge--are simply not realized. This blade does seem sharper after several strokes on a honing steel, but honing is after all not the same as sharpening. This knife needs sharpening--pretty much after every use. I'm sorry to have to reveal that truth. If you are okay with sharpening (in addition to honing) after every use, then you will find this knife to be okay as a regular kitchen utensil. But I wouldn't bother to take it on a camping trip.

I used this type knife at my son's house to slice Granny Smith apples. I loved it. Got the job done. No threatening sharp point. Strong. Ordered one for my own kitchen as soon as returned home. Can see why it would be great for camping.

It is amazing how awesome these knives are. Like cutting with a razor blade. But... be careful... they are sharp!

Recommended. Weighs about 1.4 oz without the sheath. 1.8 oz with sheath. Sharpened it near-razor sharp with a 1200-grit diamond sharpener and it easily shaves. Guessing it must be high carbon content stainless steel. It is very good steel. The length and weight are perfect for backpacking. Bought a second one and ground the tip on that one to a point to make it easier for processing fish, so we have one for meat and one we left unmodified for vegetables. MSR also fixed the sheaths on these so they stay affixed to the blade and don't slide off, so that is no longer an issue. Finally, one reviewer mentioned the lack of offset between the blade and handle, making chopping difficult. If you use a pinch grip on the blade rather than wrapping your fingers around the handle, that is not an issue. I plan to buy a couple more of these just in case I lose or wear mine out and they get discontinued. Best backpacking culinary knife we've found. We also love MSR carbon trekking poles and the Sweetwater water filter. Great company, great products.

I have Henckles knives at home, they are great. I got this because I love camping stuff. This is now my go to knife for everything. Tomatoes to beef. It is very sharp, very handy. I have only had it a month so not sure how long it will hold an edge but so far it is great.
