I absolutely adored this book. It’s filled with people I’m curious about, rooting for. I found myself having all the feels, reacting to scenes of sadness, humor, delight, and challenges. I was so drawn into the community and its people but also intrigued by the ways a new person can make everyone take stock in what community really means. I can’t wait for her next book! Highly recommended.

Rachel leaves her home town of Toronto for a one-year contract to teach French in a Catholic school in the tiny village of Little Cove in Newfoundland. I loved the interesting expressions and cultural details about Newfoundland. There are some mature situations so I recommend this for high school or young adult.

This is such a charming book - I was charmed from the beginning, right to the end. Damhnait draws her characters beautifully and I loved the setting of Newfoundland. It has twists and turns and you feel for the newcomer, Rachel, trying to make peace with her past and settle in to a new life. This would make a great film - a romantic comedy which is so much more than that. It warmed my heart and made me believe that new beginnings are possible. You just have to be brave.

I've found it hard to concentrate on novels recently and then I picked up New Girl in Little Cove. This story by Damhnait Monaghan is light but in no way shallow and so readable I didn't want to put it down. Read it through in less than 48 hours and grew to love the characters, the place and the use of language. Smiled and chuckled often as I read. A delight.

This is a very entertaining read and a good story… A great book to take on vacation and sit in the sun and read or with a glass of iced tea on the front porch… There are some authors who have the ability to make you feel like you are there and actually getting to know the characters… This author does a great job at this… Not all authors have this talent. My mom and I are the big readers in my family and I was going to give this book to her to read after me however near the end when she brings in the abortion issue, i’m afraid it would turn my conservative mother off… Too bad because it’s a great story!

New Girl in Little Cove by Damhnait Monaghan was a well-deserved 4.5 star read for me. In 240 pages the reader gets a complete, heartwarming, yet substantial, story about a young woman who “comes from away” to teach French at a Newfoundland school in Little Cove. With quirky characters and a charming setting, this book was a joy to read. I had recently read The Day the World Came to Town by Jim DeFede, a nonfiction account of when the Newfoundland citizens cared for the numerous, displaced, stranded travelers who were forced to land in Gander on 9/11 as a result of the United States closing airspace. The story of their kindness, generosity and friendship towards strangers restores one’s faith in humankind. I started reading New Girl having no idea that this novel took place in Newfoundland as well. It is the perfect fictional companion read to The Day the World Came to Town. I highly recommend reading both.I love all kinds of writing, and although I often connect with vivid descriptions with beautiful prose, I never fail to be impressed by touching stories sparsely written. With few words, this author evoked emotions and connections to characters and place. I also found the simplicity of the cover to be incredibly inviting. If you are looking for suspense or fast-paced adventure, this is not the book to choose, but if you are interested in a book about friendship, families of our own making, and challenging oneself to be better and do better, then this is a must read.

I loved this wonderful trip to Newfoundland and it's fabulous characters. If you loved Come From Away this book that will remind you of the same feelings you had then, and totally warm your heart. New Girl in Little Cove is the story of a mainlander... Rachel, ( from exotic Ontario) who goes to Newfoundland for her first teaching job. Each character will become a friend in your memory and you'll struggle not to want to try out the dialect. Great read!

Many readers of this lovely book are calling it charming, and I have to agree with them. Damhnait Monaghan does a fabulous job of bringing her readers into the world of Rachel O'Brien, who moves from Toronto to Little Cove, Newfoundland, to begin a new life. But that's not so easy, since some of the folks in Little Cove think the job Rachel came for, that of teacher, should have been filled by a local. Much of the beauty of this book rests in the characters, who are so rich they lift off the page,. Rachel herself is a delight, and then we have the secondary characters rounding out the book: the unwilling students, the four local gossips (called the hookers), fellow teacher Doug Bishop, and more. Furthermore, Monaghan brings to life the setting so well. With her focus on the language differences, the culture, and music, she drew this reader into the book even more. I'm looking forward to reading more from Damhnait Monaghan!

Loved all the characters in this book - even the “crooked” ones! Monaghan brings to life her endearing and original characters from a small Newfoundland fishing village in this debut novel. I was swept into the viewpoint of the come-from- away young teacher but enjoyed getting to know her students, the hookers and her co workers as well. I also enjoyed how music was an integral part of this novel. I look forward to this author’s next book!

Every so often a book comes along that makes you fall in love with a unique place and the characters that inhabit it, so much so that you want to visit. This is one of those books. Through well-crafted storytelling and vivid characters with pitch-perfect dialect, small town Newfoundland comes to life in all its glory. I loved every moment of this book and found it hard to put down. I am not an easy laugh but found myself laughing out loud several times and even shedding a tear. I have given this book as a gift to several friends and acquaintances and their responses have all been the same. I eagerly look forward to the next novel by this talented writer.
