About this item

  • Rectangular shape for sharpening mill or circular saws and draw filing, with tapered width to ease access in grooves
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Single-cut teeth on sides and edges for sharpening and deburring
  • Coarse (bastard) coarseness grade for a rough finish
  • Attached rubber-coated ergonomic handle for grip

The Nicholson mill hand file with ergonomic handle is 12" long, has a rectangular shape, and has single-cut coarse (also called bastard) American pattern teeth on the sides and edges for sharpening mill or circular saws and draw filing with a rough finish. The file tapers slightly toward the point to ease access into grooves. The file has single-cut American pattern teeth for sharpening and deburring, and square edges for filing sharp corners. An attached rubber-coated handle provides an ergonomic grip.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I bought this to use with a hand made jig to do knife bevels. Seems to work great. Takes steel off well etc. I have not used it enough yet to know about longevity, even though I have owned it a while. But I would advise anyone looking for an inexpensive file to get this one, from a good brand instead of some crap brand.

Bought this to file off teeth of old saws. Unfortunately, this file appears to be too soft. Not sure if they screwed up the hardening, but the saw is scoring the file and the file doesn't do anything to the saw. My other cheapo files have no issue on the same saw. Would've sent back if I hadn't removed the handle.

Was not boxed, did not include the handle and arrived sticking with sharp end sticking out through the box.It is however an excellent file as are all Nicholson files...

This review is for Nicholson Mill Hand File with Ergonomic Handle (Boxed), American Pattern, Single Cut, Rectangular, Coarse, 12" Length.Length is great for filing axe heads, handle is comfortable to hold for long periods and the file pattern and durability is high quality. As noted, this has a Coarse pattern and was needed because my Lansky puck wasn't working nearly fast enough to help re-shape an old worn out axe head (hatchet). Length allowed for fewer reps before switching back to the Lansky puck to finish out the job.

This bastard rasp is perfect for grinding and sharpening your splitting axe to fine splitting form! Your wood will woe the day that Nicholson made love to your axe. Recommend.

This is one of the best files for sharpening lawn mower blades safely. Nicholson is one of the only brands I trust for durability and reliable service after being disappointed with other brands.

Pros:-Affordable-Good handle-Works well quicklyCons:-Not made in USA anymore?(need confirmation)Summary: I bought this file to work on axes, hatchets, and mower blades quickly and safely. My six inch file was getting my fingers a little too close for comfort even with good gloves. This product took off consistent amounts of metal from both sides of the file. I would recommend this file for anyone working on larger hand tools or needing to resurface large areas of metal.
